also who would be my best resource for the carb. is this something that i can get at any good auto parts store or do i need to go to a specialty outlet like summit, lmc etc.?

I grew up on 50's and 60's Chevys and don't recall the carbs being a problem. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 67 | 43 years old could be the problem, worn throttle shaft/baseplate can cause idle problems and acceleration issues. but old G.M. carbs were basic and reliable. what do you mean by tempermental?the carb maybe the byproduct of the problem not the problem itelf. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | Need a bit more info. Car? Truck? 2 or 4 bbl? Reman Rochesters are available (Napa has them for certain). Alternatively, at least with 4 bbls, you could go Edelbrock, which is more or less a fancy Carter AFB. Or you could overhaul the existing carb, if it isn't too worn out.

thank you | | | | | Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 403 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 403 | It might of been rebuilt but where is it leaking? Out the shaft, accelarator pump, over the top of the float bowl? If it is out of the float bowl area it might be loose screws on the top of the carb. that were not tighten down. Internaly could be float stuck or bad float. May be the screws holding the float bowl to bottom of the carb. are loose. I believe there new manfacture carbs still avaible at the Truck Shop, Jim Carter or maybe Napa for a reman. Rochester's I believe came standard. 62Blue Don

A small foriegn particle can get in the needle & seat & cause flooding & gas leaking out the throttle shafts. For a off the shelf carb the Edelbrock performer is hard to beat. If you have a 2 barrel you will need a different manifold. If you have a 4 barrel you will need a plate to block the heat passages in the manifold. A place like Summit or Jegs has the best price on that sort of thing. The reman carbs you get at the parts stores about half the time dont work right. Dont give them your old one till the job is done & you are satisfied with it. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. The only advantage of a 4 barrel is more power. also check the rest of the engine. If the points &/or timing are off it can be blamed on the carb. They say money can't buy happiness. Chances are if the carb is original, it is some form of Rochester 2-bbl. The Rochester 2 barrel carburetor is one of the most reliable and "bulletproof" carbs that has ever been built anywhere at any price.
It may need a little TLC, or you may have other problems. Why not specify symptoms, and exactly which carburetor. Might be an easy fix.
Jon. Good carburetion is fuelish hot airThe most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify. thank you If you want reliability and a "nontempermental" carb, you definately don't want a Holley. Scott | | |
