Not the original in it..The only numbers on the housing I can make out are 3817769N....It has been welded on and scabbed some coil springs on it..I need to find out what it is....Thanks in advance..

How about a picture of it?
What is the gearing?
What is the bolt pattern?
Why exactly do you need to find out what it is? either the gearing is right or not, if not then yuo will need to change it. And either it is adequately mounted or its not and therefore you need to fix it.
Please provide enough info and I will try to help you.

There should be a stamped # starting with 2 letters. (example HE 12 E) or similar if its a chevy truck rear end. If you find it, go here and check the different year axle codes. Good luck. | | |

Does the differential load into the front of the housing AND have a rear pan? If so, it could be an Eaton. Their numbers are stamped under the rear pan and gasket area.

gear ratio-3.73
Gm part#3817775 stamped on pinion (11 teeth)
Gm part# 3817778 stamped on ring gear (41 teeth)
Gm part# 3817772 stamped on carrier
It does not load from the front and the cover is 9 bolt as is the ring gear gear. axels are both approx. 30 inches long with 17 splines.
