I just painted my garage floor and I thought I had fixed all the leaks. I ordered a oil pan and that should stop that leak but I get a leaking from the front universal joint. I don't see a place for a gasket. Any help would be apprieciated.

TPB,

If you have a 1/2 ton 1951 with the original torque-tube there is one u-joint inside a bell/ball right behind the transmission.

A good u-joint ball gasket and seals kit includes:

1. several gaskets that go between the ball-housing collar and the transmission (check the Shop Manual for number of gaskets to use)
2. a seal that goes between the collar and the ball
3. a seal that goes in the neck of the collar and seals around the torque-tube

i have the best gasket universal joint set #5151 but I don't think it has those blues gaskets. It is for years 1929 to 1951.

I wonder what changed in 1952?

In the Classic Parts set of gaskets/seals, the blue gaskets (4 of them - some other sets only come with two gaskets for this location) that go between the ball-housing collar and the transmission. I think the black gaskets might be for the 3/4 tom which has a short enclosed piece of driveshaft that attaches to the rear of the transmission.

The 4 gaskets are used basically as shims and can be easily made from gasket material. Having more than one in position on the ball housing/transmission join takes up the slack (described in the shop manual) and if a leak develops loosen the bolts and a gasket can be torn out and the bolts tightened up to make it drip free.

The Master Parts Catalog indicates that the same seal kit is used for 1/2 tons from 1929-54. It looks as of the black, 6-hole shim/gaskets are for the 1954 Hydramatic.

Hoyt,

You are right about the 6-hole 1954 hydra-matic seals. What type of cover goes over the u-joints on a 3/4 ton u-joints/driveshaft extension tube?
