| | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 | i was helping a friend with his 53 6400 fire truck. he said the right front hub chewed up a bearing. so i remove the wheel/tire and hub off and he was right the inner bearing was completely gone, supprizingly the spindle is in fairly good shape. he has a 52-53 6100 across town and we go fetch the drum hub assembly. went to install it and the drum/hub assembly makes contact with the shoulder of the spindle before its completely in place.
was there more than one spindle/bearing between a 53 6400 and 52/53 6100? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 | is the race completely seated in the wheel. when i did my 38 the other week i thuoght i was firmly seated against the edge of the bearing ( I was punching it out for inspection) but instead knocked the race slightly back so when I went to slide it back on it wouldn't seat properly plus i screwed up the seal and had to get another one.

| | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 | yes the bearing on the replacement drum is fully seated from what i can remember from yesterday. i was looking in my gmc maint. manual at my 350 drum arrangement and i think from what i saw in the picture is now whats left of the bearing on the 6400 is now part of the spindle  i was thinking it was all chewed up and when in reality its fused to the spindle whats best removal method  | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | I would take a cut-off wheel and cut the inner race until you're almost to the spindle. Then take a chisle placed into the cut and drive it into it until it cracks. Then you should be able to drive it off the spindle,

If splitting the bearing doesn't work, you will need someone who is very steady with a torch to burn it off. You will then need to dress the spindle to accept a new bearing. Hopefully yours isn't this far gone. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 | luck was with me today. i heated up the race with a propane torch and found a slight groove between the race and the spindle. gave it a whack and it moved, it was then i knew it was mine. removed it without breaking a bead. the spindle was is good enough shape to recieve the doner drum and hub and moved the truck to a temp location until new bearings are installed.
