I've been having problems with my points in the distributor and Tabdoo16 told me that they were worth the money, but I'd really like to know if they ARE actually going to eliminate the hassle of points. What are your experiences? NOTE: Not going to buy them right now, because my starter doesn't work, just want an idea if they are worth it. | | | | | Joined: Jan 1970 Posts: 365 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 1970 Posts: 365 | They work great and take a lot of guesswork out of your ignition system. The directions are pretty good and are easy to follow,

No condenser; no points to adjust/replace; what other hassles are there with having points?
I've been using them in a 12v for 10 years and in a 6v for 4 years; and, I will soon be putting a Pertronix unit in a 6v positive-ground GMC truck. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 43 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 43 | I've used many of them on GM V8s. Others will disagree, but I think they are the best upgrade ever. I have not tried them on the bolts yet. Very simple too.

When I get my starter working again I think I might get some. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 324 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 324 | Well worth the money. No more points to hassle with. | | | | | Joined: May 2008 Posts: 194 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2008 Posts: 194 | I use it on my 57 3100 V8. On the V8 it is a bit harder to install as you need to pull the distributer and pull the pin and put a shim at the bottom of it. Then install a new pin. They do not tell you this until you read the detailed instructions. I used this one for the 283 v8 http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=1181/591.0.26484.26485.0.0.0Other than that I did not like having to worry about the proper air gap between the ring and the sensor. You have to add washers to adjust the gap. I think I still have an issue as when the engin gets reall warmed up and I try higher RPM it seems to miss a bit since the distributer shaft lengths just a tad from heating up and the air gap increases. I need to put a nother set of washers in there. But as far as having it start, it is great. I do not run my truck often and with the old points I had to clean them to get it to start or adjust them or de-pit them every 3 months. With the pertronics it just starts, even after sitting 6 months or more. pretty simple. Now they have an Ingniter II that seems they still have the same ring. But it is smarter and may adjust for some of the issues I am seeing. http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=91181/591.0.26484.26486.0.0.0You might consider going for the correct igniter II version for your install. The original PerTronix Ignitor is available for 41-62 Chevrolet and 39-62 GMC engines (6 and 12v volt; positive and negative ground). $89.95 Make sure you get the right part number to match your style of your distributor. 1167, 1167N6, 1167P6 1168, 1168N6, 1168P6 | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 506 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 506 | The 1168 series Fits 1954-1962 Chevy 6 with standard single point ignition, except with dist. # 1112314

Before you order online, I would check with your local parts house.
1168N6 online at PerTronix is $111.06 plus shipping. Local parts price is $97.30.

Truck always ran smooth and started fast. Runs smoother now and starts faster. Having said that I don't think I would rule out converting in the future. Someone said that in the instructions it tells you to keep your old points in the glove box in case. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 899 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 899 | I've had one in my 6V 1952 216 for about 4 years with no problems.
