I have a 1970 GMC 1/2 ton pu that is a one owner rust-free truck. It spent its life in Alabama and now its up in NJ. What is the best way to undercoat/rust proof the truck so that it will last up north? The rockers and cab corners are notorious for rot so I'd like to do what I can upfront to keep this from happening.

Contrary to popular opinion, putting undercoating on a vehicle can promote rust rather than prevent it. Rust occurs in areas where water and debris collect and don't drain properly. Adding thick undercoating only makes it more likely to collect and harder to drain. The best way I know of to prevent rust is to regularly wash salty residue off during the winter and make a habit of physically checking rust prone areas to clear debris manually and unclog drain holes when necessary.

the rust on these rigs comes from the inside, where the factory put no coating at all, like inside those rockers, slowly caused by condensation caused by temp and humidity changes .... the only way to "make the truck last" in your area is to keep it in a climate controlled garage .... only use it in fair weather when roads are totally dry

beyond that, if you want to actually use the truck, just do so and fix problems properly as they crop up

I agree with both responses. I do spray my under-carriage with rattle can paint every summer after a good wash job with the power washer. It seems to help on my 99 Dakota!

I have had a couple of local guys say thay have drilled access into various body panel locations and sprayed it in. Then close it up with a rubber plug. I've never used it but it looks interesteing.

I was going to suggest a product called Waxoyl,I've used it for years on many of my cars.It's great for box sections. The only problem is I can't find any dealers in the U.S.A for you!

heres my 2 pennies, there is a gun on the market ..sorry I do not have a link right now , but it is for sprayin used motor oil ..in PA they been sprayin used motor oil in the hard too reach spots and on frames forever to keep the nasties we get dumped on the highway every winter at bay.
if ya do it before every season it really does help.

Unfortunately our roads departments are a bit too handy with the rock salt on our roads! You can rot the A** out a 'eurobox' in two to three years over here! ,

Sorry guys but I have to disagree. We all know what oil does when it mixes with dirt, it turns to that black gunk that build up on everything. Thinking it will keep moisture away is wrong. It holds it in place. The front crossmember on my 38 was full of the stuff because of the front seal leaking over the years. When we pulled the core support off the support bolts were rusted almost completely through and the crossmember itself was less than paper thin and had to be replaced. The best method by far is keeping the area clean of debris. Do as you wish but if you spray anything that will trap & hold dirt you are asking for trouble.

evem if you get 6 spray cans or a gallon and spray it yourself. Something is better than nothing. Used engine oil contains acids collects dirt and is messy. I live in the rust bowl of North America. Backing plates on 5 and 6 year old chev trucks rust off here.
