Contrary to popular opinion, putting undercoating on a vehicle can promote rust rather than prevent it. Rust occurs in areas where water and debris collect and don't drain properly. Adding thick undercoating only makes it more likely to collect and harder to drain. The best way I know of to prevent rust is to regularly wash salty residue off during the winter and make a habit of physically checking rust prone areas to clear debris manually and unclog drain holes when necessary.
