Someone put heavy duty gas shocks on the rear of my 61 Apache shortbed stepside. Does anyone know where to get standard shocks for it anymore? JC Whitney has discontinued them. The ride is so stiff that the slightest lump in the road feels like a bolder.

Any parts store like Carquest or Napa should list them in the catalog & have them available. I will look up the part #s tomorrow.

I couldn't find a listing for a '60-'62 in the current Monroe catalog. There is a listing for '63-'66, 59541 Gas Matic LT or 59001 Gas Matic. Not sure if they'll interchange with the earlier truck.

If you can get me some part #'s that would be great. I've tried several places that can't even find a listing on them. As near as I can tell, 60 and 61 were different, in the rear, from earlier and later years.

The Gabriel # is 82086. I don,t know who handles Garriel anymore because Carquest switch to KYB. Classic Parts (Chevy Duty) has them in there catalog for something a little less then $34.

I used Monroe Dodge 1/2 ton shocks when I couldn't find them for my 62. Seems they worked well if memory serves me correctly.

I took my old shocks to the parts store and measured the extended length and compressed length. They were able to match them up with some Monroes that fit just fine.

Auto Zone carries Gabriels.

I ordered rear shocks for my 1960 stepside from Jimmy Carter. They are way too stiff. The front suspension is extremely smooth, but the rear is like no springs at all. If I step on the rear bumper there is damped spring action as expected. I suppose if I loaded five hundred lbs or so in the bed it would ride pretty good.
