The GMC engine is longer than the Chevy engine. Maybe someone will post information about how hard it would be to install the 235 in a 1957 GMC truck. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | Figure out exactly what the GMC motor is first. If its a 270 or 302 you have something worth the trouble to swap.

I am looking to change out my 235 without having to modify anything. 1957 Chevrolet 1/2-ton Stepside LB in the Gallery My Photobucket shots The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873) | | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 237 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 237 | Does anybody have any experience installing a GMC 228 where a 216 once was?
I plan to use the 216 bell housing to get the rear mounts right but length is my problem,GMC is a little longer. So the wiggle room (if any) is up front.
Should I just move on to a 235?

The GMC will bolt right up to the 216 or 235 bellhousing this is the easy part. Another real problem is finding a good GMC without a cracked head or block.
First what every car or truck the longer GMC is going into will need more room up front so see if you can re-mount that radiator forward. Also you can eliminate the GMCs fan and put an electric pusher in front of the radiator, saving a couple inches. Anything can be done if you want it bad enough to solve the few problems. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 506 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 506 | Alan,
If it's a 1955 GMC 248 the block casting should be 2324002.
Looks like 1955 was the last year for the 248.
