Im coming down the homestretch on hittin the road in my Bolt, I need to Fab up or find something that would make a good under bed spare tire carrier, for a 15" wheel and tire.

What about something like the factory under bed carrier?

Drew, Can one be purchased aftermarket or maybe hit e-bay ?..I know I wont find anything local.

Tips.....hummm....unless you're after the exact "original" equipment I's suggest you look into the spare tire mechanism found on a great number of 80's Chevy pickup trucks. It's a simple little ratchet winch mechanism with a cable that allows you to drop the spare to the ground and raise it effortlessly using a little jack handle. Much easier on the body than trying to muscle a spare up and get the bolt mechanism tightened.

Would imagine your friendly "vehicle reclaimation center" would be a great place to look...might even get them to roll an ole pickup on it's side to make unbolting it a bit easier.

I would suggest you keep an eye on Ebay. It took a while, but I eventually got the whole setup. That is the carrier,j hook, hinge piece, lock bolt with wing nut, and even the the bed cross piece. I think I paid 125 bucks with shipping. In something like three hours I had it all down to bare metal and painted. Just be patient. It seems that things go in cycles on Ebay. Also don't just jump on the first one you see, if it isn't all there or damaged. By all means look everywhere you can think of. Also carry a list of the things you want. You never know where you will find somethig you need.

i used a simple one, welded two bolts at the correct location to the stock spare tyre carrier, very easy to mount and works a champ. all told this was about $15.00 at any salvage yard. i made up my own crank because i needed it to be longer (for this bolt).

I have one of those on my truck, too. We fabbed up a separate crossmemeber for it and I used a McGuard lock for the cranking rod, with a 1/2' ratchet and 5/8" socket to drive it.

Find a Chevy LUV and grab the spare carrier from it. The easiest thing in the world to mount, works like a charm, and I bet you wouldn't have $20 in it. By the way...did I say how easy it is to mount? Four bolts, and you're home free.

I think it would be easier to find an original spare carrier up here than to find a LUV!
Don't forget under bed carriers were not the same for all years of AD trucks. Some came straight down others were slanted to the right.

Thanks for teh repiles gents! I think Ill hit the local salvage yard and see what kinda deal I can get from newer truck with teh cable mechanism ...will post what I end up with.

Wise decision Tim; after all even if it doesn't work you haven't sent much money and you get the enjoyment of grazing the wrecking yard.
