RELAX ! It is awesome that you 13 and got an interest in ol chevy trucks, And I think it's going to be soooo cool to see your truck coming along (as you learn) And as you build it the way you want it. But FIRST if your going to ask a question like "what's this thingy" that it is obvious your going have to READ THE MANUAL

And when all else fails...READ THE MANUAL !!Then read the Manual some more ! and after doing a search just to make sure...READ THE MANUAL ! (along with a auto shop class the first chance you get)

I am glad that we can handle this like adults, and calmly talk it out. I still say that jokes like that have no place in the regular forums. Tell him to do a search, or buy a book and read it. Just don't suggest that he destroy his engine, and then say: "Sorry, I was just joking". I admit that I need to lighten up. My problem is that I put too much thought into my posts, not too little(this comment is in response to an edited post). Any way, I am glad that we can express opposite views. That is what America is all about.

If you would get off your high horse and look at the end of my post you would see something that MOST everyone else would recognize as an icon that means that it was intended as a joke or at least a not so serious reply. It is kind of refreshing to have such a newbie on the site but on the other hand to have someone like you show up and start with their holier than thou crap makes me think you need to stay in the turnip patch. If you don't like something you read here then tough it out there tex. If you are looking for hugs and kisses all the time then wise up. You ain't going to get it here or anywhere else.

JDL, I'm happy to see there is another young guy interested in old trucks (and cars). I started even earlier than you, rebuilt the engine in my Uncle's 1941 Pontiac when I was barely 12 yrs. I'm now 76 and still love the old iron. Just remember everything in the old stuff is pretty logical, no computers and complicated stuff. Just look closely at what you're doing and you'll learn. I wish you lived closer to me, I'd be happy to give you a few pointers when you need them.

And young man (JDL), like the guys said, read that manual over and over. And read it again. Since Keith has that manual on his site, you need to at least start printing it out and put it in a 3-ring binder. Shoot if you don't have access to a printer, let us know and a bunch of us can start running copies for you.

We all want to see you succeed with this. It's what helps keep us going. This is very gutsy for someone your age, working on your own - except for the virtual buds you have here. Hopefully, we'll be able to track someone down who has the heart of chevman32 but isn't half-way across the country from Indiana!

It is a good story and besides the Gallery addition, there's more to it. We still have to get it all together. I have a number of pieces of information from other Bolters. So, it is very heartwarming.

And Koolkar closes with saying: "None of this would be possible without a Stovebolt Page, now would it?"

That means YOU ALL!

We just stick the information out there (which you all have provided -- well, we may have had to bug you for additional parts of it) and YOU ALL provided the HUMAN response.

Well, I know that the truck is in the gallery...Due to emails on Yahoo.com. And someone mentioned reading the owners manual....I already have...Twice......Except for the steering and suspension section.

I was around 13 and younger when first working on my old truck. I did a pretty decent spray paint job to slow rusting, rebuilt the rear brakes, learned why my head wasn't getting oil (clog oil lines)and either drove around or pretended to drive around.

Mistakes:
I sand blasted the hood while on the truck without protecting the windshield. This only resulted in frosting the glass. Please don't do that.
I also thought I wanted a modern radio with a tape player. This only resulted in hacking the dashboard up.
Please don't do that either.

Eventually I turned 15 got a job and I haven't had near the idle time to work on the truck.

It's taken me nearly 15 years to get back to it.
Thank goodness We have this site now to help us along.

Ok, not to offend you, but even if I didn't know what the cap was for(I mean come on people, I've only seen an engine this old in my dad's Farmall tractor, and newer engines don't have the cap there!) but I think that I would know not to sandblast with the windshield unprotected. And hopefully the radio(which isn't original and thankfully they mounted it under the dash and didn't hack the dash up) will work so I won't even have to get another one.

I would have to agree...poking fun at an adult who should know better is one thing, but poking fun at a 13 year old who has shown a great interest for these old trucks is another. Jordan wasn't asking the question because he didn't know better; he asked it because he trusted us with the correct answer. I wish I had his drive at keeping my truck in good shape when I was his age. We need to keep in mind his only 13...how much did you know when you were 13 guys? I really didn't have a problem with Houston's post, but if it were me, and Jordan had filled it with Anti-freeze, I'd feel real small. Let's protect Jordan from sarcasm at 13, he will get enough of that as adult...

jdl, I hadn't noticed this thread til today. Several people have advised you to get a shop manual. I told you about a week ago that I am sending one out to you. It should get to you very soon but with the long weekend, the mail will be dalayed. Hope you can put it to good use!
