Hey I have a stupid question... I'm trying to remove the brake & clutch pedals on my 52 GMC but I'm not sure how to take off the retaining clip without damaging it. Do you just hit it with a hammer and punch?

Not sure about yer '52 but my 38 is removed below the floor. The pedal and shaft are all one piece.

In your 52 the petals are two piece, first from the rubber plate at the top to below the floor. Are you talking about removing it at that point or the second section from there to where both petals mount to the frame?

I guess I should have explained better, I can get the rubber pedal and arm off, it's where the clutch and brake pedal arms pivot, they're both on a shaft then there's a spring and a funny-looking retaining clip that the assembly manual calls a "pin lock". It looks like maybe I could pry it off of the shaft, or knock it off with a hammer and punch, but I don't want to get it bent so that it won't hold right when I put it back on. I was hoping someone had been here before and had a good idea. Thanks for your replies.

I don't know why you want to take that apart but I would suggest taking the assembly off and working on it on the bench. Why do you want them off?

I'm putting in a V8/automatic, I don't need the clutch any more but I want to keep the original brake pedal, so I just want to take the clutch pedal off the shaft, cut the arms off it and put it back on, just as a spacer for the brake pedal. It's just the one little clip holds everything on the shaft, should be real simple, I just want to be sure I don't screw it up.

The "assembly" is held on with what is called a Warped Washer. You need to bend half of it down and then it will slip out of the groove and come off. Then the washer,spring ect will come off the shaft.
I'm doing the same thing you are but instead of cutting the clutch pedal off I had a friend of mine make me a "spacer" to slide on instead of the clutch.

Thanks Achipmunk! Then when I put it back on I guess just a couple taps with a hammer to make sure it holds good enough. That makes sense I'm just a little over-cautious when it comes to stuff like brakes, and that doesn't look like a part that would be easy to replace.

spacer sounds like a good idea! being cautious is a good plan also since parts like those get sent to the scrapper when somebody does a frame swap.
