I've been keeping an eye on this adapter plate

I'm thinking of getting one to put a 292 in a 1940 1/2 or 3/4 ton.

What are my bell housing options behind a 292 and what transmission options does this give me?

I'm thinking of welding on a bracket to hang the clutch and brake pedals onto the bell housing. Just can't figure out if that's an option for a later model bell housing.

Just a novice, but I have a 292 in my COE with a sm420, I have been told several v8's used the same bell housing, so I would guess you would have plenty of options. Someone will be along who knows for sure Iam sure, good luck with yours, Tom.

All the chevy I6 engines and V8's have the same bellhousing bolt pattern from about 63 on up.

Greg,
That is awesome. It will do exactly what you think it will do. You will be able to bolt up most Muncie and saginaw transmissions to that plate. Muncies like the sm320, sm420, rockcrusher, etc. You would also be able to bolt up a T-5 with a little modification, but may be a little light behind a 292. Another great choice would be the GM version of the A833, but you would likely have to bore the bellhousing out to 5.125, or turn the bearing retainer down to 4.686 inches. I'm not sure of the welding thing either, but there are ways around that for mounting pedals.

you do not need an adapter behind a 292 to a T5. it should bolt directly to your newer style bellhousing (any V8 one) w/ the larger hole.
a 292 has two offset mid / side motor mounts and if those are strong enough and made short, offer great support. the T5 has a rear stock S-10 rubber mount and those three should work. the later (larger hole) bellhousing centers the tranny & bolts directly to the T5 in my case. the T5 holes must be re-drilled to 1/2'' holes. I use grade 8 bolts everywhere. the sm420 has a smaller tranny hole.

The only thing I question is that the front bearing retainer does not look like it sticks out of the adapter enough to pilot in the bellhousing. What keeps the transmission inline with the crank?

On closer inspection... How do you bolt the bellhousing to the frame? Do you need to have the transmission bolted up to sandwhich the adapter?

It looks like you bolt the adapter between the bell housing and the transmission.

Basically what I think it does is add the lower mount points that were removed on the later bell housings.

Seems to be a real simple idea and maybe worth the $90 just to try it out.

I'm not sure about the bearing retainer. It would be a a 1/4 inch shorter due to the thickness of the plate.

I've thought about using one to put a 292 in my '49, It looks like a good alternative to replacing the early x-members when updating to a late inline or V8. It should work in the pre-AD trucks too if you updated from the earlier 'crash box' and 3 speed tranmisions.
