I been in search of old AD trucks because I need 3 piece wheels to replace the two piece my truck has and as Grigg said there's some out there and I've found 5 so far ranging from 49-54, 1.5 and 2 tons. I have yet to find a truck with a full set of 3 piece wheels as they may have 1 or 2 on them.
Now for the interesting part,as 3 of them were for sale but when I asked how much none were less than 500 bucks. So I asked why and they told me...the weight ! At 180 a ton for scrap they figure its worth that price.
What I'm expecting to see is the disappearance of a lot of good parts and that would not be good.
So I guess I'll have to hurry and find it before it's gone, which is why I brought this to light.
Dan

Dan, An interesting observation. I agree with you. I recently cut the cab off an 85 Ford dump truck, and welded a tongue on the frame so I can use it behind the tractors. I was left with an F350 cab. It brought $265 at the local scrap yard. Probably lots of ideas out there as to what should be made with that scrap! Scott

I see load after load going for scrap. It's no secret, metals of all types are going for record prices.

In many areas drug addicts are stealing just about anything that can be carried off. Cast iron sewer grates have been disappearing, as well as man hole covers. The copper thieves are the worst. Imagine all the radiators that have been stripped from vehicles parked or stored in rural areas.

Where I work, we don't dare leave anything outside light enough that two guys can lift. We have lost virtually thousands of dollars worth of items that I am sure ended up at the scrap yard.

Just recently, a local law has been passed requiring scrap sellers to produce not only a photo ID, but they must also leave a thumb print.

I could go on for hours, telling you the stories that I have been reading about almost everyday.

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of good old iron is going to be melted down. I have already done my part, have you saved any old trucks lately? ohwell

John

Guys I've seen to AD busses go to scrap and just today a GMC dumptruck, I'd eyed that dumptruck since I was a kid but hadn't seen it in a few years, sure hated to see that. It was too late to save it by the time they'd loaded it. There's been loads and loads go by lately, gonna get hard to find parts for the old ones before long.

I've hauled in enough old junk iron from my place and around my wells to pay for my firetruck, the 55, and most of the parts I have put into it. While hauling off a load recently I spotted a Scout 800 that was in better shape than the Scout I have to play in. Could've bought it for scrap price. I decided not to because I have too much to work on already. It's a shame though, I told everyone I knew that might be interested in it so maybe someone would save it.

We are doing our part we now have over 200 cars and trucks and dont intend to crush any of them. We are going to part out most and sell some for projects. We think the future market for projects and parts will skyrocket due to every one selling to the chinese for a fast buck. OldWolf

I'm thankful that the yard I go to a few miles from here likes to save the old beasties. they clear the yard every couple years, but always seem to hold on to the old iron just in case. once they've been picked clean they scrap em, but not a minute sooner. Would be nice if more yards did that, odds are they could make more $$ off selling the parts than they'll ever get for scrap tonnage.

I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things.
But thats just MY opinion!

Oldwolf -- You have my support! Good on ya! And I hope the market rewards you for your effort.

As for me, I recently saved a '53 6400 from the crusher. Didn't really want it, but I wanted it to be crushed even less.

Jon, I was not ignoring your question, but I had to go to Ft.Wood and the PC was off. I'm looking for 3 piece, 20in, 4.75 center. I could deal with 5.25 by using a spacer.
I spotted another AD truck on my return from Ft. Wood. It had the wheels I'm looking for but they turned out to be 18in.
it looked like a big truck from a distance but turned out to be a 3800.
I'd like to find those nice looking wheels with the small rim edge and lock ring. I've seen some which have a big ugly bulge at the rim edge, mostly see them on COE, and I don't like the way they look.
I was in Springfield yesterday and spotted a 51 or 52 1/2 ton PU sitting in a used car lot, front row. Not often seen, made my head turn ! I thought about going back and asking how much.
