this link/thread started me on the look out for a rear back seat to fit my 51 - 3104. it's a take off from Todd's photos
Caroline & I found a 90 Ford astrovan rear TILT FORWARD seat.
Todd used one that has NO tilt, but does have a CUP Holder ARM-REST.
it seams all 90's to our limited eyes have either. Since our gas tank is
under the bed behind the cab we wanted a tilt forward model. I;ll take
photos as I rework the seat and put a set of head rests and thicker
contour foam, lumbar support foam and heat.
i believe just about any 90 astro will work. It looks pretty good from rough measuring. I think ya got something there Todd.

I installed a 1991 F#@* aerostar removable rear seat in my 51, it fit in
the original seat basket perfect plus it's got a fold arm rest/ drink
tray and seat belts built in !! worked out great...

i finally got the factory bolts undone (used an impact wrench) to remove the bottom
frame. The seat i bought tilts forward, so it appears that the
position of the locked seat is a little more than the 51's more
upright position. The locking lever is located on the passenger side only. This
seat has built in retractable seat belts & a middle belt. today I will take some
pics and investigate more how the fit is in our stock frame. At first glance it
looks like the 51's frame sheet metal @ the back corners has to be
removed. This is not the case so far. I'm much taller than Caroline so she will most likely have to use a pillow. The new seat is more square. The astro seat is about 21'' tall, so I'm about 3-4'' shorter than stock.

now that i removed the seat belt attachments the astro seat fits inside the stock 51 frame work nicely. the reclined position of the astro will need to be proped up in the back of the frame work because of the angle of recline.

This is great news. I have been walking around a 1992 aerostar rear seat in my shop for years. It is even the right color. If it will fit my 52 1/2 ton that would be great. I guess I will drag it out and see what it looks like.

is getting leg room. People must have been shorter that year

It has a center seat belt built in. The seat is temp'ed into my truck using the 51 frame work=(F/W) and sliders. The astro seat fits w/in the 51 seat F/W w/o cutting. I may have to raise the rear of the astro seat so the back is about the same line as the 51 back bar angle. By doing so will also give me more verticle storage room under the seat because i cut out the face panel fronts. http://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h298/1951otter/?action=view&current=DSC00492_0008.jpg I'll have to fab up some sort of brackets to hold the seat firmly in situ. The front bracket may be as simple as welding a flat tab 3''Lx2''W probably 1/8'' or 3/16'' thick, drill my two holes to insert the four bolts needed there. I'll be using julanio's seat/shoulder harness that I have already installed B-4 painting the truck and cab's inside. I found out I do not have to change out the release buckles to fit the julanio's ones, the fords are the same connector/release size, but have to anyway cause the buckle color doesn't match my juliano's ones. (ho-hum). The 90's astro van seat we got folds down. It has a center seat belt built in. Once all the fitting is done I can then take the seat to an upholster for a contour foam job, lumbar support, heated pads and re-cover as my cloth is slightly stained.
I may also use the 51 back bar (F/W) as a base for welding up something to hold headrests. It appears to be strong enough to hold a set of small head rest pads from ???? some small auto. Then those will get covered to match (maybe).

so far so good.

Here is what I have done lately 11/09. I finally got the photos done, there are more to come.
Because we used a ford aero star van third row seat, the seat cushion/ padding is thin because it is the third row seat. As mentioned it fits inside the stock AD frame. After going to the upholstry shop the fact I needed to bring the seat heigth up by about 3'' for my wife Caroline was so see could see. It also helped me w/ clutch & brake operation and I'm 6'-3''.

I made four extensions to re-locate the seat higher.


I will take the seat back to the upholster and have the cover re-made, extra padding done to contour the two main driver/pass. sides, hand pump air bags for lombar support and add the electric heated pads. I also used julieanna's [???] shoulder harness but need to make the belts longer by 16'-24''. This seat has the seat buckles built into the seat frame so I will have those lengthened by 6'' or so. I will have to cut down on the stock seat top tube/rail to make the seat look stock. I will also add 4 holes and weld in tubes so I can add headrests to the top tube/rail.

Are you using a CHEVY Astro van seat or a FORD Aerostar seat? I'm confused.
