I read somewhere that there is a kit to regear the rear end to go faster than 45 mph. Has anybody used this kit? If so, do you still have low end torque for hauling heavy loads? I want to get my 47 AD flatbed to where I can haul tractors to shows with it.

Boy you know if there are gears available I am not aware of them. My 56 and my 64 have the same center section in their rears 6.40 to 1 in high. I get 55 out of them @ 2957 RPM with 10.00 22.5s and late modal V8s

What size 45 truck? I guess a 1.5 ton right?

No, no kit that I know of.

What engine do you have? If it is only a 216 then faster gears will only hurt you while hauling a tractor, unless they are pedal tractors To go fast and haul a load you need power..

Someone here did an axle swap that might interest you. With some searching you may find it.

The guy cut the ends of the axle housings off the stock axle, and put those ends on a newer axle. He was then able to use the original hubs and brakes, while having a much more highway friendly axle ratio.

Obviously I've simplified the process a bit.

what about a 2 speed axle?

The benefit of a two speed axle is a slower gear, not a faster gear.

Some modern two speeds have good fast ratio choices, but they are generally two big and heavy to be a good candidate for swapping into our old trucks.

That ebay auction appears to be a Rockwell rear axle from a Chevy 3500HD. If I am guessing correctly it has 10 lugs on 7.25" circle, like your truck.
He calls it a "10 bolt" but it is not the GM axle most people call a 10 bolt same falily as a 14 bolt, it appears to be a Rockwell.

It is not a great idea to put Disc brakes on the rear without having them on the front too.

If he has the rest of the front axle, I see hubs and calipers in the picture, then that would be an option too (after narrowing).

For the price he is asking both front and rear axles should be included and in great shape..

When I was looking at gearing up my truck, I came across this website that has some of the 5.43:1 gears for the 1.5 ton rear end. http://www.vapinc.com/ringandpinions/main.html They're pricy,, but looks like some are available.
