I've got a '49 6400 with a blown motor. I think it is (was) a 216. I need to replace it, but I am getting conflicting info as to what will go back in with the least trouble. The truck is just for fun. Won't see a lot of miles. I know I could drop a V8 small block in without a lot of trouble. In terms of 6 cyl engines, what would go in using the original mounts, other than another 216? What would go in with minor mods? I need to weigh the cost/benefits of the different options.

A 235 or 261 would slide in I think the original was most likely a 235.
Get the numbers from the little flat pad by the distributor with that number there are gobs of guys here who can help.

Essentially, the full pressure 235s and 261s will fit but only if you use the shortened water pump (or the relocation plate) that American Classic, Jim Carter and the others sell. The engine and driveline guys can tell you more.

The engine # is HEAI030939. Any clue to as what it is?

I think they will all physically bolt up except the 292 (different front mounts). It would just be external parts that are different.

There are a few issues with a small block V8--one of them being a lack of clearance between the left manifold and the steering box. It is doable, though, and there are numerous threads on here which cover it.

1954-55 1st 235 or 261 = new full pres oil system and bolts right in place with no changes same pump (different thinner belt on pully)
