well we did it 28 and snowing outside went over to my friends and got this big barrel stove and hooked it up and barrowed a karosine blast heater. we got it up to 60 inside with the stove full of wood we turned it down shut the heater down put two coats of primer on the senthal kind. then we got both heaters going again and waited one hour .shut the heater down stoked the stove mixed up 4 quarts of electric blue cheape paint from ebay opened it to our suprise it was more purple then blue thinned it 2 parts paint to one thinner dumped in a whole bottle of wet look hardner between the quarts and started painting. went off whith out a hitch between coats we opened the doors for a few minutes to get the over spray out of the air for the last coat i added a few drops of fisheye. as there was a spot or two on the hood it came out nice used my trusty craftsman spraygun never failed me yet very happy with the paint kept waiting for the place to blow .but it never happened next one i might try without the stove and have it colder just to see what it dose mayby ill just do a test panel the fire just gets me to nurvus .my friend that was doing the spraying is hooked he wants to do another one. i have a 52 3/4 ton im going to let him spray i think black with silver fenders we had fun

You do realize the risk in pumping that much flammable material into the air in a closed space with an open flame, don't you?

Can you say "death wish"?

I was thinking the same thing Czechman. I had 2 of my students injured while doing the same thing in a garage around here. One died , the other is still under-going burn treaments. Painting a truck with Kerosene heaters in the garage.

He did say they turned off the kerosene heater but there was still the wood stove which is nothing more than an open flame. Even if the wood stove is pulling air in from the outside through a sealed vent, you've only managed to reduce your risk, not eliminate it.

I don't know how old these guys are so I'm just chalking stunt this up to the "immortality of youth" syndrome.

I just finished painting a 55 Ford F100. I have a kerosene blast heater also. I fire that thing up and get the shop between 60 and 70 degrees. Shut it off and shoot a coat of paint. I vent the shop and fire up the heater again. Works for me. We've had temps down in the 40's here lately. No that I got all the painting done, the temp got up to 65 to day.

Frank, what you're doing is perfectly safe. Spraying volatile material into a confined space WITH an open flame isn't. Two entirely different scenarios.

None of its safe if you don't wear a respirator, I hope you are.

I wear glasses, so a full face respirator is an absolute. I've painted some small pieces once without it. One heck of a headache later. They are not cheap, but well worth the investiment. You can also get the faceplate shields so that you get a lot longer use of it without getting overspray on the faceplate.

In the fire department fire fighting business there are two concerns, UEL & LEL. In other words there is an upper explosion limit and a lower explosion limit. If the conditions were just right the whole thing, life & property would be history. You were lucky not to meet the exact mixture. Next time ????????? Please be careful.

Anytime you use a full mask cover it first with a couple layers of saran wrap that you can peel off if you get overspray on the mask. Don't waste your money on shields...

Or, you can always use a bit of thinner to get the spray off but I would rather not get spray on a mask then deal with it after .02
