Although it's not the problem you're describing, my needle will hang up if I screw on the cable to the speedo too tightly. It's like the drive part of the cable is a bit too long and binds up if it's screwed in too far.

Did you compare the old cable with new? Same diameter and length? What was wrong with the old cable? Did you try lubing up the original and you still had problems? My '65 danced a lot when I first got it. Lubed up the cable and all good.
If it's a repro cable, you definitely can't trust that it's the same as original. Seems like if it worked before and all you did was change the cable, either the cable diameter is different and not engaging the gear or the cable's not in the gear.

Wally,
Did the binding occur from the get go or did it get to a certain MPH and hang?

it has been so lomg since i had the orginal cable i don't rember what happened to it. the strange thing is the odometer works. i didn't notice that til i had the cable installed for a couple of weeks. as is most after market parts made in china or taiwan. they are short over there so maybe so is the inner shaft, ha ha . it is a mystery.

I had a similar problem. The speedo needle would actually go down as speed increased. Replaced head, cable, same thing. The 3spd trans has a spacer to pinch the yoke to the speedo gear riding on the output shaft. In my trans, this was loose, so the speedo gear was not always spinning at the speed of the shaft. Took apart and replaced spacer on shaft. Worked ok. This was also on a 54 3100. I just got it done, so it is still fresh in my memory.
