I am looking at a nice GMC 54 3/4 ton std shift pu. [I had a 53 with a 235 in it] This motor is blue, and has gmc embossed on the valve cover but it has 2 studs for the hold down , looks like a oil filter on the right front of the motor, can anybody tell me what motor it is and do you think its original?

Probably a GMC 228. Look just behind the distributor, there will be a machined flat with numbers/letters stamped into it. the first 3 will be the engine size. 228,270 etc.

The code plate on the door pillar will have a 24 indicating a 248.

Something like 152 24 PZ 1234

ok thanks it is a 228 , is there any info on this motor. it seems like everything evolves around the 216 and 235. does the 228 have a solid lifter camshaft in it like my old 235 had? thanks Tom

There's plenty of info on GMCs at Old GMC trucks.com

A 228 in a '54? I would expect a 248. A 228 is going to look original in that truck, but I don't think it is original. What does the trucks serial number say?

My '54 came to me with no engine but had been changed to a 228 at one time. The title still reads 228xxxxxx. The door plate, of course has 24 on it.
