Hi Everyone,
What's the best sounding mufflers for a 235 inline 6 with dual exhaust? Also who sells a dual exhuast kit?

Patrick's is coming out with a stainless steel system in November or so. Also Jim Carter sells the pipes and you add the mufflers. Heard that Flowmasters sound the best but depends on what kind of sound you want and whether or not your state lets you install round glasspack styles or that they have to be oval. Smithies supposedly sound good too. There was a previous thread on this about a month ago.

Mufflers are kinda like toothpaste; they all do the same job, it's just a matter of what flavor you like.

Let me tell you my revised plans for my 292.

I'd initially decided on dual Flowmaster 40 series DeltaFlow mufflers all the way out to 2" tips. Then I thought about the resulting sound and the cost. To achieve the deep near v8 sound I wanted I would have to have a balance tube or crossover pipe added to help blend the exhaust notes. That would only add to the $300+ tab for the cost of the Flowmasters.

I decided after listening to some online sound bits of straight sixes with true split dual exhaust that I did not want to go that route. I hated the sound. Not the deep tone that I wanted but very much "six-cylinder like", if that makes sense. So I decided that off the headers I would have the exhaust connected by a 'Y' pipe into a single Flowmaster muffler. The Flowmaster I've chosen has a 3 inch inlet and dual 2 1/4 inch outlets. I plan on finishing the exhaust from the muffler back with 2 1/4 inch diameter pipes all the way out.

I'm dropping the engine in this weekend. Everything should be finished by mid-month. I'll post pics and let you know how it sounds.

I love my Smithy's. The best part is the I6 sound. It doesn't sound like a V8 cookiecutter conversion.

I've been thinking of dual fentons into a 2 in 2 out muffler. Seems like that would be compact and serve the purpose of the balance tube too. Anyone heard of doing that? The 2 in 2 out are somewhat unusual but I have seen them.

That dual inlet outlet muffler should work for a balance tube if it is designed right. It could be two separate mufflers in one case. I think the two into one with one tailpipe one would be the best set up. The dual tailpipes might not have enough heat to keep them dry. Could be prone to rust out. The exhaust gas is already cooled by the time it hits the muffler so one 2" or 2 1/4" tailpipe would be plenty. You could always add a 4" fart can like all the imports are running .

Dennis; At this time, Patrick's is going with a stainless steel system with a dual in and out muffler. The outlets will come back to the rear on one side and sit "shotgun" style. I think that this might be what you're thinking of. There is a picture of the muffler in their latest catalog.

Did any of you notice the tailpipes on the woodie in the above Smithy ad?

Using aluminized tubing would eliminate the rust through problem for good. That's certainly what I plan on using to finish out the exhaust on my '66.

A BMW muffler assembly from a '88-91 325i might work well. It's dual in/dual out, has built in tips, shotgun style, and is straight and flat. It also has plenty of flow and sounds good. It's already designed for a straight six.

My dual pipes get plenty warm.

About $150, I think.

That is probably the chrome tip, I mean the whole muffler.

Ansa muffler Ok, so that was a little more than I thought. $192.96 from alloembmwparts.com. It comes with pipes and hanger already welded up. It's a nice piece, though. I have had mine in and out of my car a few times (you have to to change the clutch/driveshaft), and it's quite well made. Mine is still good after 13 years and 150,000 miles.
