Was gonna do it at home, but I don't trust my well right now do to lack of rain, plus the car wash is heated. Anyway...I got most of the thick buildup scraped off and was wondering what is the best degreaser to use to help loosen the rest of the grease? Would a typical oven cleaner do the job?
Thanks in advance! | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 324 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 324 | Yes the oven cleaner is a good tool to get the grime off. I usually buy the store brand, it is cheaper than the name brands. I also use mineral spirits and a kerosene mix to get the grease off.

I just spray it on liberally and let it soak for a few hours then take it to the car wash. The combination of the cleaner and high pressure water will typically take almost all of the grease off if you spend enough time. It will also take off the factory paint on the frame and inner fenders, so keep that in mind if there are areas you do not want the paint to come off. Of all the methods I have tried, this seems to be the quickest and easiest. | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,703 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,703 | I personally like & use Castrol Superclean ..in the gallon purple jug you can pick up at any Walmart ...It is good stuff ! | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 289 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 289 | I use "Greased Lightning" in a purple bottle. Works great. Not flammable, and easy on your skin. | | | | Joined: Apr 2007 Posts: 38 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2007 Posts: 38 | I use have used kerosene for degreasing for years. | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | Commercial floor wax remover will do a great job. You can buy it in the Gal jug at Home Depot. It is not as strong as some commercial grades but will work.

Someone at the jeep web site recomended this stuff. They said it was the strongest cleaner you can buy withour a license. Not only did it clean off the crap with very little elbowgrease, but it removed half the old paint. You can buy a spray bottle for a couple of bucks and give it a try. It is very caustic, so wear rubber gloves. And, it will curl your nosehairs, so use it outdoors. Don't bring your chassis into the living room.

Lemony fresh scent, and you can just hose it off. I've found it works better than Gunk degreaser. | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 435 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 435 | Dawn dish soap works great. Spray it on or squirt it on straight from the bottle, let it soak (the longer the better)and then power it off at the car wash. Best price of anything you'll find out there to try. It’s been around for a hundred years and is made for doing just that and it's available everywhere, F&F, TSC, Auto Parts, Hardware Stores, etc. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

Second start a new thread with your question in the "Hipo" forum. You'll get better response there.

Someone else mentioned a purple cleaner that they said was caustic. We must be thinking of different cleaners. You can use "purple power" to wash your hands if you need to.

I couldn't believe my ears. Then it dawned on me...I have some orange citric parts cleaner solution from SAFETY KLEEN in a 6 gallon bucket that has never been opened. WOW...I scored! I've been spraying the entire frame every day for the past (4) days now, scraping the big stuff off as I go. A friend of mine is coming over with his trailer on Wednesday to help me take it to the car wash. I have a choice though...use his pressure washer @ 3500 psi using cold water or take it to the car wash using hot water wit soap @ 1200 psi. Any recommendations which way to go?
I really can't wait to start on this frame. To me, Wednesday is a big day for me! | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 | Do both. Pressure wash first ,then to the car wash. Spray it down with WD-40 or it will rust before your eyes.
