This almost feels like it belongs but it looks like there is something missing from the front of the switch.

Does this switch look like the rest of the 1950 AD’s out there??

Looks just like mine in the 53, but Im not sure if its ever been replaced although it still has some pretty worn gm keys with it. Also has 2 pin holes in the face, at 12 and 2:00ish.

Mine has only one hole in it but I have a replacement that is keyed for the glovebox, doors and ignition that has two holes in it. I haven't put in the two hole version as I wonder if it should be the one hole or two hole version originally?

What I was wondering about guys is the fact that there is now bezel or trim ring like I've seen on the later trucks. Tims Suburban for instance. This one looks like it was an after thought.

Denny - mine has a bezel ring threaded on. I couldn't tell you if it was generic to the truck though.

Part numbers for ignition parts.

1954/55 had a bezel ring (2.198 - locking dial) on the front of the dash. The 47-53 ignition switch was held to the dash from the rear with a mounting plate (2.192). All years used the same switch/cylinder (2.188). I think yours looks original for 1950 (47-53 - no bezel ring).

I'se askin' this one, because out of the hundred or cockpits that I looked into this summer they all had been mutilated, opps, sorry, I mean "customized". Dern near impossible to find a stock Advanced Design truck round these parts at any of the shows that I went to. I only found one show that was in any way connected with VCCA and there wasn't one stock AD there.
Thanks for the info guys.
Well if that's the original switch, then I still think it reeks of Rube Goldberg who must have been the designer.

I don't see a bezel in the factory assembly manual for 47-54.

Not hardly. Actually, I think my newly remanufactured 235 is going to have to be pulled and taken back for another reman-reman. The engine now has 400 miles on it since a complete reman but there is something about a mysterious clunk, clunk, clunk towards the forward end that I'm not real comfortable with. This noise seems to increase at idle as the engine heats up. I've done the rod to ear thing but can't pinpoint the location. It's just not right. It's a real bummer to get the truck to where I have it and now think about yanking the engine.

Anyway, I'll take a photo of the ignition switch for you. This switch is actually rather a pain as the wiring is encapsulated in spiral wound metal flex conduit. I have no idea as to where the po may have come across it but I've found odder things during this rebuild.

I don't know about the 47 - 53, but Tim is correct on the 54's having a bezel ring - my 54 is original and it has one.

The pic looks like switch in my 52. I suspect that it is made that way so that the light next to the switch illuminates the switch when the dash lights are on.

It does do that Jimmie D! Thanks Sam, ya I'm sure by '54 they had fired Rube and an gotten a real designer in place.
Hey Don, I thought that's the way the Bolt was supposed to sound???

Since I don't want to hi-jack your thread I'll post the answer over in the Engine & Driveline shop as a new thread.

I see the ring in the manual. I don't have one on my 51 and I'm guessing it must be just for the 1954. Sorry I didn't see that page ealier.

Your switch looks just like mine (1951), and appears to be stock, the switch face looks sloppy with the gap between it and the dash hole, but this small circular space around the switch face is there to allow the light from the ignition switch light (behind) to illuminate the ignition switch face when the headlight/parking lights are turned on. Putting on a bezel would clean up the appearance but would render the light feature useless.

Yep it sounds like that's the deal, just as JimmyD noted a couple of weeks ago. Make the hole to big for the switch so some light can leak out!
