I did a search for "won't roll up", but was surprised to get no hits:

My driver's side window won't crank up. Even though I crank the handle, it just sits there. I can grasp it with my palms, both inside and out, and pull it up. I'm going to read my shop manual to see what Mr. Goodwrench has to say about it, but I'd love to know what real life experience has to say. Anyone have this problem before? How is it fixed?

Sounds like the regulator has stripped out. There's plenty of vendors that sell complete regulators, shouldn't be a problem getting it fixed up,
Scott

I suspected it could be that a few months ago, and added one to an order for other parts. The handle has a little floppiness to it. Just three attachment points, right? I don't think anything else has to come out if I can get to those screws.

I'll start with that and go from there. Thanks for the input. (Shop manual wasn't a wealth of info, if you ask me.)

There is a great book sold on AD cabs (Servicing Chevrolet Truck Cabs 1947-48)which is available as a reprint of a 1948 book. I will try and find the vendor name but for 6$ it sure had good info on this kind of stuff.

I JUST did my window regulators because I had a special problem. The Australian built 41-46 had basically identical regulators but different window cranks with early plastic/potmetal crank handle which were broken off. Can't find any complete Aussie cranks, so I bought 2 of the $15 regulator repair kits from Classic Parts and replaced the Australian crankhandle points with US ones and used US cranks, problem solved.
My windows easily glide up and down, just like new.

I had a problem with a window that wouldn't roll up. I found the set screw in the inside handle had loosed up. I pushed in on the handle and tightened up the screw. It worked.

Does someone have an exploded view of the window crank assembly? The interior skin is in the way of seeing how it works. My regulator works fine- when you crank the handle, the rack moves up and down like it should. However, the scissor mechanism doesn't seem to be connected to the rack. When I stuff my hand inside the door, I can feel a flat bracket on the end of the rack that has a hole in it, but it otherwise is connected only to the rack. It flops around suspiciously, and I have no idea what it is supposed to connect to, or how to connect it.

I think my problem is that the crank mechanism needs connecting to the scissor subassembly.

Any suggestions? Any pictures out there? Thanks in advance!

I'll look in the book Tuesday morning when I go down to the shop. If there is a picture, I'll make you a copy.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to any info you can provide.

I checked my shop manual, but the only graphics I could find in there are photos of what I'm looking at. Sure wish I had x-ray vision...

Bill - I missed this at first - sounds like the regulator arm pins have come off the sash track - or the track may be rotten

here\'s the regulator complete in the up position - it mounts [4 screws] at an angle - the peg on the large main arm goes in the track attached to the bottom of the window glass frame lower sash, and one end of the 'mobile' arm does too - the other end of the small arm goes into a track higher up

I think originally they had a small spring clip in the track to prevent the rollers coming out - if you need more visuals, I can scan the assembly manual pages, but what you're gonna have to do is take it all apart and see what's broke ohwell

Thanks Bill. Actually the first picture helped a lot to show me that there is just no way around disassembling the thing. When it came to the heater rebuild, I jumped right in and had fun with it. I'm not so excited this time. This doesn't look so fun. frown

I have a question for you: what does the spring do? Does it provide the tension to keep the window in the up position? I have a sinking feeling about mine.

that coiled up spring tightens when you turn one direction, loosens the other - may be to hold against the weight coming down .... if you need one I got lots grin

it's not really tooooo hard to take all the guts out and reinstall them, just slightly frustrating cuz there's not much room to work, you can do it :hammering:
