It works but the noise is making me want to disconnect it. Im pretty sure it's in the speedometer, but I guess it could be a bad cable. Is there any way to check which it might be? Also, if it is in the gauge, how hard is it to pull the speedometer and check it out.

I unhooked the cable from the back of the head and pulled out the inner cable. I lubed it with a synthetic paste type lube as I pushed it back into the sleeve. Use a synthetic paste so it doesn't pump the lube up to the speedo head and so it won't thicken up in cold weather.It has been quiet for years now,

I was able to reach my hand behind the cluster and unscrew it, didn't have to pull the whole cluster out. If you do have to pull it, it's pretty dern easy and straightforward. Just poke your head under the dash and stare for a minute. If you've got gauges, I think it's best to separate the oil/fuel from back of cluster (held on with small sheet screws) before pulling it out. That is if your oil gauge is still hooked up with the original hard line. Good Luck. | | |

If the noice still happens, it's in the cable. If it stops it's in the gauge. Not high tech... but it's a plan that's worked for me

Mine was making quite a racket and lubing the cable did nothing. All the howling was the speedo - sprayed some WD-40 into the speedo opening (where the cable goes) and everything got nice and quiet.
I don't think my WD-40 fix is the most appropriate way to lube a speedo, but I have a spare I'm reworking and this was a quick fix. About 200 miles ago and still working fine though. | | |
