In the process of replacing the rear wood floor on my 49 sub. Taking many pics and when finished will do a tech tip if anyone is interested. Should be finished in a couple of weeks.

cool ,i just purchased two sheets of marine plywood in preparation myself i've got some paint to do below the floor line in order to set the body back on the chassis.get some good pics ,i'm curious to to see how close our ideas/plans our. i got a new ditigal camera so i can get some pics now myself .i have a bunch of pics on an old camera but it has a bad cable .so far i have not been able to down load those pics.

Good luck with this major undertaking. Will you be taking out (and reinstalling) the wood in one piece?

Tpyle, MN & Tim, It will be 2 pieces probably with the seam in the center. Depends on where the seat sockets end up. I took the old floor out in many pieces with a sawzall.

Just to give you my thoughts ,i cut my old floor out along the centerline left by removing the the metal floor strip(floor came out in two pieces).i am planning to use a 3/8" router bit to form a lap joint and hide it under the floor strip. my thought is the bolts that hold the strip along with glue would provide support support to the lap joint.i can see where the orginal was tounge and groove joined (5 sections if i recall correctly)at the cad end.the other end nearest to to barn doors was rotten,which prompted me to cut it out in the first place. i guess you can say that where the can of worms opened up. or

TPYLE, Was there a metal floorstrip down the center of your floor? Mine had no strip but I may put some back in like on a pickup to take some of the wear off of the plywood and to cover the seam(s).

i have five metal strips on the 53 panel truck floor.one(eachside) 4 1/2" from the wheelwell,1 (each side)14"from wheelwell,one center at 24" from each wheelwell.i'm sure they were in the panel trucks to protect the wood from scrapes and scuffs. my 53 burb does not have them,as cargo was probably not a concern.my 49 parts panel has the wood slats similar to a pick-up with the metal strips .these strips are not the same length as the 53 has.tom

Tom, I am leaning toward putting in the metal strips as on the panel trucks unless they interfere with the seat sockets. On occasion may want to haul something and the strips would maybe protect the wood floor which I am going to varnish instead of painting it black. Could you e-mail a pic of the panel floor? Thanks guys for all the help.

will do. it'll take me a day or to. the camera cable is hooked up to the puter at work,which i won't see till tuesday or wednesday.

Cool Weeds - can't wait to see the pics and read all about it. I'm thinking about a piece of plywood for the second seat then wood strips like a pickup bed from there to the tailgate.

TPYLE, the e-mailed pics came thru and I went to your website and found them there also. Good shots of the floor. I wonder why the panel floor was in 2 pieces and the sub floor 1.

weeds, the panel floor was in one piece before i cut it out. those pics are the bottom side of the orginal floor. i saved them for the template to layout the new wood which is in the opposite corner not pictured.i will add some pics soon as i figure my camera and webshots out :confused: tom

weeds ...i looked @ yer photos...awesome project,,,really looks good..is that ifs from a 1/2 ton truck ?...mine is & it`s a little wide for my body,leaving front tires sticking out...keep up the good work....

Just a quick note. I'm in the middle of replacing the rear floor in my 51 Canopy Express. As I'm restoring, I cut out the top angles on one side and partially on the other. What surprised me was that the one piece floor wouldn't come out through the rear door opening. I was able to get it out through the side opening, but panels and suburbans don't have the opening, so it may not be possible to do it in one piece.

I'm told that I can get wider marine plywood, but expect that it will be expensive. As the old floor is 63" wide, I'll need a sheet at least that wide. Sure am glad I got it out in one piece for use as a template for the new floor. I've got to replace the inner quarter panels, so it'll be a while before I go back in.

So, how is the tech tip coming along, Weeds???

Well guys, I'm following this thread with lots of interest to. I am working on a 52 Panel and have it down to the point I am about ready to take the body off. I have not taken up any of the "skid strips" as of yet but will be doing this hopefully on Saturday. I hear the talk about one piece and two piece floors which I will know what mine has soon but didn't I read somewhere that the wood was put down first and then the body set on top of it??? I have my stripped down fairly well so if anyone has a tidbit of info or opinion that will save an old man some aggravation please chim in here. I also hope to have my daughter or future son in law to set up my webshots thing or something to show pics. Maybe for Christmas??

Our E-Mac went South 3 months ago. Apple finally gave us a new I-Mac and I am back on line. Trying to retrieve pictures of the rear floor and other stuff off the old E-Mac hard drive. If you guys can hold on for a while the tech tip on rear floor replacement will still be forthcoming. I may have to take the whole series of how to pics over if I cant get the originals out of the old hard drive. Weeds

Weeds, take your time. You are a long way ahead of me. I have had a set back (my feet) for a while but doing good now. Just last night I started wringing off the bolts that holds the back of the panel to the rear chassis crossmember. I did look at the plywood and mine is a one piece deal. I may do as someone mentioned above and lap a joint in the middle and hide it with the bed strips. As I looked around under it I said Man O Man look at all the bolts that are bound to be a "pain" to get out. But at least I'm making progress and getting it stripped down. All is off the front and next is the running boards and rear fenders. A few mounting bolts and that sucker will be ready for the sand blaster while I blast the chassis. Whew! I have a digtal camera and if my daughter and future son in law will help me set up I to will have some pics that folks can see. In the meantime I am gathering parts, blasting, priming and painting the little stuff. More later.

Sorry guys lost all my pictures of the rear floor replacement when this E-Mac crashed so will have to start from square one. I am bringing the sub back into the heated shop from cold storage next week. I will then retake pics of how I did the rear floor. Anyone still want the tech tip? Weeds

Anybody have a source for the rubber mat used in the back of Suburbans? Mine is all there but pretty crispy.

Suburban rear floor cover/mat was made out of linoleum.

OK burb guys I have the text for the rear floor replacement tech tip almost complete and am now in the process of retaking the pics that were lost when my E-Mac went south. I hope to be able to submit the tech tip this week. Yeah I know promises, promises.

Weeds, thanks for your efforts. I look forward to reading about it. I have mine panel ready to set off the frame but no where to put it after I do. I have got to build a dolly....or something. And just this past Saturday I discovered a lot more rust out and very old patches than I want to admit. Right now someone could get a real good buy on all the panel stuff!!
