Rules vary state to state and I have no idea what they are in Florida. Sort that issue out before laying down any real money for any truck!

Here in AZ I did that once by going to my insurance man & paying him a small fee to get a 'Bonded Title'. One of the easiest, most hassle-free title changes I've ever done. I swore then if I ever got another title with messed up paperwork I'd just pay my dues & get another Bonded Title. Check in your state or maybe a FL 'bolter will chime in here. Doug

tell the dmv that your dad's paperwork was ALL lost in a fire ... long ago ..... and you want to get it going again
THATS ALL
let them inspect it
about $15 bucks later you have a duplicate title
this usually works

providing it's not stolen for a restamp number

I registered my 54 1/2 ton in Florida with nothing more than a bill of sale and proof of insurance. I was asked if there was a current registration or tag....explained, to the best of my knowledge, that it had not been registered or tagged in the past 20 years. Signed an affidavit to that effect, paid the tax and registration fees and immediately received my new Florida antique tag and the title in less than a week. There was no inspection or even picture required.

Just a suggestion...I would present a well written, notarized bill of sale which included the number off the door post as the vin# and other pertinent info. Hope this helps you get your truck on the road!

Dave

Friend f ours up here in Pensacola had the same issue. Just like Dave, he had the insurance and bill of sale and had no problems.

They went off of the VIN on the insurance card and bill of sale.

Good luck and be lucky you dont live in NY!

If you know who the previous owner is, he could apply for a duplicate title.

In South Dakota there is something called a "title 91" I believe. If there is a title and it changed hands a couple of times and still has not been changed over to another party, you can somehow get it done. Never tried it though.

Bonding here costs $300-400 and the title is under question for 2-3 years. If no previous owners come forward in that time, then the title come clean to you.

Good luck.

Hey Lori, why are you picking on New York? Other than the state deserves to be picked on, that is.

Here, you generally need the registration and a bill of sale for pre-title era vehicles. That's it.

thanks everyone, especially Fla54Chevy3100.
i called DMV, and 3 different local tag and insurance agencies here in south florida, but they all told me not to buy without a title.
they told me there is no way to be sure it is not stolen.
i think i will just wait until i find one with a title.
but that seems to be cutting down my options on cool trucks.
thanks again....leonard

Ratrodking,a wise decision. The rules do vary state to state, but its best to be sure when you lay out the money for a vehicle.I just passed up a nice trade for my 65 pickup due to a title thing. The guy said he thought the title was in his buddies name. This sounded very fishy to me,the car could very well have been stolen,so I walked away from that deal.

There are tons of old trucks rotting on farms with no traceable titles. There are lots of titles out there with no traceable iron.
