Have any of you cut off, or removed, the old tires from your rims for disposal? Did you just take them up to the local tire place and paid the disposal fee?

I took mine to the tire store & threw them in the pile of old tires they have next to the store. They didn't ask for a disposal fee.

i never pay the disposal fee. they can go to our local landfill you just have to cut them up. i usually take a box knife and cut them where the sidwall intersects the flat tread. all the way around and on both sides. it's just as much you pulling on them as the knife. it takes less than a minute a tire. even if i have a tire shop take them off i always take them home and cut them and take them to landfill with my other trash. you could prob even put them in the trash service container if they are cut. all tire shops seem to want to charge the tire fee around here. hr

In most states, it's illegal to put tires in a landfill, they have to be properly disposed of through either a rycycler or a tire shop. Also, the "tire fee" that those shops want to charge, it isn't a fee that the shop charges, but a fee that the EPA charges. We get people complain about the disposal fee all of the time, we even have to charge for it if they keep the old tires. It's basically a tax, not controlled by the tire shops.

I tend to replace my tires before they are used up and then i give them to a local charity to sell. i am a big believer and good tire tread and tire safety. Ron

in PA at my local land-fill as long as you cut them in half they dont have a prob. taking tham , reason they want em cut in half is so they dont stuck to the them big spiked wheels on the equiptment dozing the garbage around.
Batteries on the other hand have to go to the battery shop for recycling.

Where I live, I have large item pickup at my house once a week. I've set out 4 whole tires at a time and the garbolagist take them everytime. As long as it doesn't take more then (2) people to pick it up, they'll take anything. I love it.

Out here they grind up the old tires to small grains and mix it in with ashphalt and use it to pave the highways. Cost a little more but extends the life of the highway pavement and the vehicles are quieter on the highway. It also prevents heaving in extreme cold weather. I guess the idea is over 20 years old but now it's become cost efficient.

cutting the tires and taking them to the landfill is the "proper" way the tire shops do here.i live in the 3rd largert city in MO. most big tire shops actually cut them differently they cut thru the whole tire with a hydrolic shear. they take a tractor trailer load at a time to landfill. i'm sure longbox is right about it being mandated by epa but that seems pretty bogus to charge if you keey the old tire. do they charge it if it is removed from the rim when you bring the rim in? do the tire shops have to pay it to distributor? i doubt it. i know they don't want people throwing them in ditch or burning them but if you dispose of them properly what's the problem. i'm all for alternitive ways of recycling like grinding them up for play grounds or asphalt even if it costs more, but face it that's not what happens to most old tires. i bet there isn't a epa truck that comes and picks up the old tires and the bag of money the tire shops collected either. who keeps the "tax"? i wonder who keeps all our "tax" in MO after the tires are cut and go to landfill. the reason in MO they have to be cut is so they don't float to top by gases produced from landfill. the reason people complain is they are sick and tired of being charged more with out it being in the actual price. everything has a surcharge, local tax, hazardous material fee, disposal fee and so on.every 39.99 item costs 50.00.

We don't charge our disposal fee if the customer keeps the tires. But we do still have to charge the EPA fee, which is $2 per tire. No way out of it. Now, if someone just bring a set of rims up and wants tires removed from them, then we only charge for the labor, about $6 a wheel. Since they're not buying new tires, there's no EPA fee. And even then, we'll go ahead and toss their old tires in the junk pit, no charge. I can say, in Illinois, it is illegal to put used tires in a landfill, cut or not. Most used tires here end up at ADM, where they make them into the playground bottom, asphault fillers, and other products, like garden hoses. In our case, a company from South America buys the usable cores from the company that takes our old tires. Anything any good gets retreaded and sold in S. America. Defects go back to the manufacturer, and anything not usable as a retread goes to ADM or another company that recycles the rubber.

sounds like you are farther along than we are. i wish there were more programs like that here. lots of tire go in here. lots of places sell used tires i like to buy them for some of my vehicles sometimes. so sounds like the epa fee you speak of just applies to buying new tires as long as it's included in the price great. does the tire shops have to pay for all this recycling out of the disposal fees? if so, sounds fair too.

Yes. The shop disposal fee does go to paying the company that takes them, in our case, Lakin.

I give mine to my grandpa.

He puts them on implements and hay wagons.
