I am in the process of upgrading my '37 and one of those upgrades is getting rid of the old cracked steering wheel that is in it...
Steering Wheel

The previous owner removed the original steering column and replaced it with... something... I have no idea what, but am hoping someone out there recognizes it...

As you can see, it is a tilt steering column, but is it GM and if so, does anyone recognize it from a car? A truck? Any ideas as to year?

The only hint is that it does not have ignition on the column so I'd guess pre-1973???

I need to have some idea so I can replace it either with an original part OR an aftermarket steering wheel, but would need to find the right adaptor to make it work...

Any ideas?

My guess would be Chevy van. They used a column w/o the ignition switch up into the early '80s. The wheel looks to be a truck/van item, too.

Almost any GM steering wheel should fit. The splines and diameter of the steering shaft (where the steering wheel fits) haven't change in over 50 years. (I just confirmed this recently on my '48. A Buick steering wheel from the 90's slid right on the '48 shaft and fit perfectly.) You should be able to buy a steering wheel from a junk yard from any GM make - Chevy, Buick, etc. that will fit your column as long as the only thing you need in the wheel is the horn button. Or take it off a GM vehicle and test it on your column to be sure.

You can also buy aftermarket wheels that will mount fine with the correct installation adapter kit.

Since I don't have power steering (nor will I ever), I just bought a 16&3/4" wheel from Grant (and the adaptor kit) to fit my new Ididit tilt column (without ignition switch.)

It looks like a 1970-ish truck column/wheel,

Thanks for your help and ideas, guys... I just didn't want to have to buy 1/2 dozen wheels OR adaptor kits to find the right one... now hopefully I won't! Much appreciated!

I have an 84 Chevy 1/2 ton and that wheel looks like mine. I don't know if the chrome parts (horn bar etc) would look like it but the basic outline is the same.
