I need a trailer hitch for my '62 Suburban. I want a decent, modern receiver-type hitch. Does anyone know if there is a place I can find a specific application for our '60-'66 trucks? Or am I going to have to find one that's the right width, and modify the mountings flanges that bolt to the chassis.

I found a local shop whose specialty is truck accessories and welding. They custom made my hitch as they do many. It was 4 years ago but I remember that it was actually less than the cost of the 67-87 pre-made hitches that were available at the time. So I would look locally in one of your more populated areas for such a shop. BTW, it looks just like the shelf bought hitches. My only regret is that I didn't have them incorporate a spare tire carrier which they could have done.

It was a direct bolt-on, however I did have to jockey the rear bumper brackets a bit, but everything fit and worked as designed.

Here is a picture of the receiver hitch installed on my '66 Chevy C10 lwb fleetside truck. It is hard to see, but it tucks up nice to the factory chrome bumper.

i got a class 4 one that was almost new off my cousin's 72 ford 1/2 truck, he didn't want it any more, is was a perfect fit for my 63 gmc k10. so if you look around and find one for that 70's vintage ford it should be the same for yours

Truck & Burb frames are different at the back, a truck hitch won't fit a burb. My next candidate for a swap is a hitch from a 73-91 suburban.

Thanks for posting this question Brad. I had the same one actually. With all of the moving around we do, we need to put one on the 66 to tow the Rat Rod around. His F150 is going to be moving the 49.

I took one from a dodge caravan and cut it down in width to fit. the brackets that fasten to the frame rails had the perfect drop and angle.

The best price I've found for hitches is U-Haul. If you have a large U-Haul center near by they have receiver hitches to fit any vehicle including old Suburbans. I've have them install hitches on pickups, suburbans, and my 87 Jeep Grand Wagoner.

The ones that fit the 63 thru 66 (like the one LMC offers) will not fit the 62. They have to be modified. You will spend more if you buy one and then have it modified. Unless you can do it yourself.

i vote for making it yourself. i made mine for my 64 c20 and do a lot of heavy towing. i bought channel that fits snug over frame and weld a heavy piece between them that you can weld your receiver tube to. it looks good and it will prob take more than the frame could handle. i bent the bumper brackets on my 66 pulling a heavy trailer and didn't want to do that again. you can also incorperate the saftey chain eyes and i put in two more tubes for a detachable towing sling cause my 64 is a wrecker. hr
