The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Head light ring, is it NOS?

I bought this AD headlamp ring on ebay, advertised as "NOS". But I don't think it is. Mine have a small piece of metal spot welded to the ring that slides into the headlamp housing on the fender. This one has a metal wire clip that does this. The darn thing just looks too new, no shelf damage and no box or wrapping.

What do you think, is it NOS or not?

I've never seen an original with any wire of any kind on them. But I've never really studied one in depth either,

He swore in the ad that it wasn't a repro. It may be, goodness knows there are changes in design over the years with parts. But geeez it looks BRAND NEW. I have bought many NOS parts over the years and most have a little shelf damage, at least a little. And a little "aged" look. This thing looks brand spanking new.

Well on the trucks out in the yard, some have spot weld clips and some have a spring. Must have been a change it the RPO at some point. We did buy new (repo) ones and they have the springs.

I have 2 of these hanging on the wall of the garage and all have spring clips. I am sure they are old originals because they came off a truck that was sitting on a farm. The wire clip holds the rubber in place and the clip with the "D" goes into the tab on the headlight bucket.

Keep in mind that 'NOS' means New, Old Stock.

Doesn't mean original equipment, or even that it was made or authorized by GM.

For instance, if a parts company happened to have made that replacement part back in '63.. and it was never sold, it would be a 'New, Old Stock' part.

Also remember that it's not uncommon for auto manufacturers to source their parts from multiple vendors, and the parts supplied from one vendor may not be 100% identical to the same part from another vendor.

Actualy should read NORS... New Old Replacement Stock if it was not original manufacturer.

I just parted out two 1949 Chevrolets and both had the same wire type fastner. And thank you bigbadswingdaddy!! finally somebody else acknowledges that NOS is factory and NORS is period aftermarket.

The thing looks like a perfect repro if it is. If they are this good, I would just buy repro instead of the NOS. But in the past I have found that 99% of repro parts don't live up to my expectations.

I'll check out one of these new repro rings next time at a swap meet and see. For the time being, I'll be happy with this one.

Back in 69 my 55 pontiac had the clips and they were rusty and old looking. I think different manufacturures made them. 57 cars had 3 different rear bumper corners. 56 Chev cars had 2 different hood bar extensions, depending on which factory they came from.
