Hoo! I have good news for you, Chey. That there thing of yours is exactly the same model as mine, only a couple of years newer, a model 3800 (or, according to some folks, 3804). If it has its original engine it is a 216, the transmission is an SM420 and the diff ratio is 5.14, which you will find too low unless the truck don't leave the farm much.

And, yes. There are other women on here. I expect they'll be chiming in soon. We like them. They make us happy.

welcome to the Stovebolt. That motor is not original so it is either a 235 or a 261. The original motor was a 216.

That is a nice old bolt you have there.I think that you will have many years of fun with it.

Well, I know she is a 3speed. MANY folkes say NO should be a 4, well, he aint. Thing is a 3speed. Been threw the gears myself and unless reverse is the 4th gear, He is a 3. I was "told" rear was 488. I havent had Thing very long to tell you for certain, and was "told" it was a 235ci. I havent a clue either way. What do you (and you other guys) think?

Mine is a 52 1 ton pick up with 3 windows. His name is Handsome.

I looked at your engine pic. It has been repowered; looks like a 235. It is definitely a 1-ton, though. 137" wheelbase, 9' box, 4 stake pockets per side.

The lady's car hit the front of my old truck, which was a '53 1/2-ton. Epic #2 is heavier, and shall be a harder target for the next nit-wit.


My transmission has its 4 gears in the standard "H" pattern, with the reverse sprung to the left and back, beside 2nd. 1st is a granny gear, useful for pulling stumps, or pacing a combine. I haven't heard of a 3-speed with the floor shifter in a 3800, but I suppose it could be something early.

I believe there was a true 3 speed floor shift, a friend of mine has one in an early AD GMC.
You most likely have the 4 speed SM420

The 4 posts in the bed rail/frame. Was there wood there for a "farm truck?" Anyone got pics or links to send me to so I can see what Thing is to look like completed (a 1 ton)

The shifter on that transmission looks suspiciously like the ones on the Art Deco (and earlier) three speeds.

Perhaps someone swapped in an older three? Do you have to double-clutch to downshift?

The engine does look like a full pressure 235, but we can tell you for sure if you post the numbers from the pad directly aft of the distributor.

In your album, you mentioned something about wanting to repair the cab corner. Check out the "links" section and you can find lots of places selling corners for your brother to weld into place, making Thing like new.

Also, check out the "gallery" section to see more of Thing's litter-mates. There are some way-cool rides in there. I've learned probably as much from the gallery as I have from the forums.

Ahh TY all, and I have SISTER BOLTERS Woo HOOO! This is going to be SO cool!. Thanks for such a warm welcome. I am going to post a "Poll" to find out what Things eng. is, I dont know, maybe you all do? And one of my fellow sisters asked if I have to double clutch to shift Thing, Nope, He has the 3 pattern with the Reverse over to the right and down. I wish he werent a 3. I want to keep him as origial as possible but I think I am going to swap out the rear gears and give him a 4speed. MAAAaaaaaybe he will do 55mph's that way LOL Search my name for my engine poll post!

Hi Chey, Welcome! The 4 "posts" that you asked about are holes for uprights on either Stock racks (for hauling livestock) or sideboards (for hauling grain or anything else that you wanted to pile higher than the bed sides). Answer your question or did I misunderstand it?

There's a few in there and the pictures ought to be helpful for you. Mine is an unrestored/original '49 with it's original (babbitted) 235 motor (it was possible to special order 3800's with 235's). 1-tons are cool. A little harder to get brake parts for.... but still cool. And I never lose mine, even when parked in a sea of AD trucks...

I think your tranny is a 3 speed from an earlier truck. IINM, it's the synchromesh 3 speed used in the 40's.

I think that Thing came with a 4 speed (SM420, probably) originally, since he's a 1 ton, and the factory 3 speeds were standard on the 1/2 and 3/4 tons. That, and I don't see a 3 on the tree shifter hole on your steering column.

Hey, nice truck Chey! Like it lots! I have a feeling that your truck spent some time as a fire or forestry truck. That mount welded on the rear bumper looks like it would hold something about the size of a fire extinguisher. Could be some interesting history on this here truck!

I would check with some of the vendors like Jim Carter, etc. for the LR stake pocket that needs repaired. Would be easier to get a new one rather than trying to cut off an old one.

I HAVE a old extinguisher! I am going to go see it if FITS! I was "told" it was a forestry truck. And "told" it was used for camping. Thus that was welded on for the propane. I dunno. So, that back rusted out spot is a stake pocket??? Really?? Huh...I go look now...TY!

The term "babbitted" was used referring to the connecting rod bearings. Up to about 1953, the Chevy motors used connecting rods with the babbitt directly fused to the steel rod as apposed to the modern insert style. These motors also used oil dippers on the rods without pressure feeds from the crankshaft journal. The main oil pressure was lower than other types of motors and so the later more modern 235s were known as "full pressure motors".
