One of the changes I am thinking of doing to my '54 3600 is to add a sunvisor. I notice that several "bolters" have them and am wondering where to buy them and what everyone thinks of them.

I believe for a '54 the part# is 986936. Other than e-Bay are there any otherplaces to buy the visor and mounting brackets?

Almost all the vendors have the brackets and visors - assuming you are talking about the inside visors. you can buy them already covered or plain and you cover in your own material etc. i think the originals were basically plain hard cardboard and they are a little hard to come by due to age, wear and tear.

E-Bay is probably gonna be one of your best bets. However, I've been seeing alot more of them showing up at area swap meets here lately.

Due to your one-piece windshield, the visors that will fit a 54 aren't going to be near as plentiful as those that will fit the 48-53's, but they're out there.

You can get repop visors similar to Fultons through most vendors. I see old Fulton & Pekat visors on eBay regularly. I recently bought a Fulton locally & had to modify the mounting brackets to make it fit my car but it looks GOOD. There are several different models of Fulton that mount differently but most can be easily modified to fit most period vehicles.

i love the visor on my truck, they are just so expensive to buy, i lucked out and got one for cheap, but finding a parts truck with one might be the best bet, and cheapest

I had one on my 49 but took it off. It looks cool but if you are tall you have to really lean over to see the overhead traffic lights.
So now its in the garage rafters.

We love ours. Got a good deal on one from a friend who sold tri-five parts. He picked it up somewhere and we bought it for $50.

For those that have the outside visors, how difficult where they to install?

I know that the visors refered to here are for 47-55 1st series, what about the 55 2nd's - 59's. How do they effect fuel mileage or wet weather driving? How hard are they to keep clean,(we have love bugs in the south) do they create blind spots? I love the look they add to old trucks just wondering if it's worth it.

They aren't difficult at all to install. Generally there are two different types.

One has clamps that mount to the rain gutter, put it in place, tighten a couple of screws on each side, and you're done.

The second is a little bit more difficult, as you have to drill holes in the inside of the door frame and attach the visor with a couple of small screws on each side.

I opted for the clamp type, as I didn't want to put any holes in the truck. Since my truck is a 52, I have the split windshield that you don't. With that, I had to loosen up the screws on the interior side of the center post, place the center clamp in place, and retighten the screws.

Tuts59: I didn't really see any difference in the fuel mileage when I added the visor. It was poor before, and it's poor now. I can tell you, in wet/snowy weather, they do seem to keep the windshield cleaner than without.

As for cleaning, again I believe that depends upon what type you get. The one I'm using on my truck is a Pekat Skyshield and all of it is brushed/polished stainless steel so very little maintenance.

Blind spots: The only blind spot I experience is when I'm first in line at a traffic light. I plan on eventually purchasing a traffic light viewer, but even without it's not a big deal. If I recall correctly, the visors designed for your truck are quite a bit narrower than the AD trucks. As such, you might not even have this same issue.
