Hey just wondering if anyone has relocated the gas tank to the back side of the truck between the frame rails. If you have what do you recomend and is it easy install thanks :rolleyes:

Do a search. It's been discussed dozens of times

it has been discussed endlessly - I always recommend against it .... but there's always folks who won't listen

There are numerous companies on the net that sell "universal gas tanks". do a search and you'll see. I'm installing one in the rear of my 46 with the filler centered at the rear with access through the wood bed.

i did and it has some addvantages other the lack of smell after filling. it adds weight to the back in snowy weather. yes i drive mine all year long that is what they are for. i am having it redone new body panels and paint and i still plan to use it as a truck was intended. i got my tank from fatfenderedstreet rods but there numerous ones out there. yes to the research on this site for a start. ron

Did mine--very happy with the results! Mine also is filled thru the bed at rear center. I got my tank and fuel sender (0-30 OHM) from Yogi's Inc.. Run a little over $250 for the both of them 3 years ago.

Added weight over the rear wheels is the first and only logical reason i've heard anyone give for relocating the gas tank.

On my '46 2 ton, I might end up going with one of those drum style frame mounted fuel tanks, but not for any other reason besides some fool gave me $250 for my original under seat tank.

A good condition, non leaking tank don't stink up the cab.

One other advantage IMO is the added storage space behind the seat. For my purposes that was the driving issue. Better weight distribution is another.

i got a kit for my 64 a year ago. it was pretty easy but the filler neck was hard to locate it didn't come with it. i also got the plastic tank. i am going to try to see if one off a 90 something jeep cherokee i got a deal on will work on the 63 i am doing now. i haven't taken it off yet to see if it has a pump in the tank. i am going to try it and see how well it works i want the gauge to work too.

Husband did mine a few weeks ago. I have 2 kids that I take everywhere so the smell and the added storage space were defnitely factors in my decision to do it. We got our kit off eBay for around 200. Worked great. He put the filler off to the side on the drivers side. On the 66 he had to cut out the spare tire bracket. It was easy for him because as he says "my wife lets me have the right tool for the job." hehe

Well as we are talking about making adjustments in gas tanks I have a question that has bothered me for years. Why in H___ do they put the gas filler tube on the passenger side when it is so much easier to fill on the driver's side? I'll buy the argument that the door key is on the passenger side for safety reasons but why the filler tube? Then I ask would it be possible to turn the tank 180 degrees and poke the filler tube out the driver's side.

They did just that in the 60's!!

I moved mine (63 K20) to the rear so I would have some place to mount real speakers. As I was welding up the 6" X 9" holes that some P.O. hacked into my doors, I thought that would be the best place for all of the stereo equipment. This truck will also have a class III receiver hitch surrounding it also. I didn't do it for the so-called "safety" of it, just to gain more interior room,

Filler on the right for "curb pump". That became habit for designers?? My 2 cents

Has anyone turned the tank 180 degrees and stuck the filler hose out the driver's side? I think that would be a great improvement and fun to watch other bolters do double takes when they see it.
