Has anyone made this power steering conversion on a 58-59 Chevy/GMC? I am looking for more info on installing power steering in my 59 GMC (fleet option 100)(engine is a 350). I am obtaining a Saginaw 2WD gearbox and pump from a late 70s truck. I am trying to find the CORRECT 70s or 80s Chevy/GMC van steering column. All in all, what really works? How has it worked for you and what is easy? Thank you for your time.

The factory power steering on these models was the linkage type like used on chev. & ford cars. It wasn,t as good as the latter ones built into the gearbox. You can get kit,s to change over to the gearbox type. CPP is one good source.

I'm tired of saying this - last time (no snarky comments, please). You can make your own 'linkage' type PS system by using C-2 or C-3 Corvette components (also linkage PS). I did it on my '59 Apache, and it works pretty well - and I didn't have to remove my stock steering column. One caveat - the Vette hydraulic ram has a stroke of 8" which is a little less than the full transverse wheel travel.

Mike,

'59 = Solid axle. Later model = A-arms with torsion bars. All different.
