After bidding and buying the column I started looking closer at the photos... I don't think the actual steering column rod is in the one I bought... can I just use the one from the manual column or did I just buy a $25 part to throw on the scrap pile?

I don't think the steering shaft will interchange, the older column has the shaft going all the way down to the steering box with the rag joint built in where the newer one stops at the end of the column and is splined for an intermediate shaft,

Lee | | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 | The center steering rod will swap from the adjustable length to the non-adjustable, from 63-66 solid shaft into the later 67-72 column, like blu64 said just adjust the length if neccessary, no welding is needed tho. The rag joint will work if used on the same box, i.e. some later model power boxes have a smaller input shaft than others. Should be a darn near bolt in, the only real diff is where it mounts to the dash-either weld on 2 new nuts or use sheetmetal screws to mount. For sake of originality, try finding a factory original '64-'66 Chevy automatic steering column. I have replaced a few non-original steering columns on a few of my '64-'66 Chevy trucks with original used replacements bought on eBay. This route is a bolt-on and does not require shaft/rag joint modifications. Good luck with your project.
