Hello, my wifes grandfather used to own a small town hardware store in Swartz Creek, Michigan. The store truck has been sitting in his barn since about 1980, and I finally talked him into letting me have it. Its a 53' 3100, and it seems to be in pretty good shape.

My priority is to get it up and running, and take grandpa for a drive in that thing. His health is not that great, but talking about the truck has energized him. I've gotten the breakdown on some of the customizations he did to suit his needs.

Some of the things I found interesting, there is a compartment in the front of the bed that was used for hauling glass, i'll get some pictures of it on the website. Also the bed is diamond plate. His brother-in-law managed to 'borrow' some from his work, and there was a midnight install of it at the brother-in-laws shop. Its a lot of fun hearing these stories.

I also have some pictures of an earlier AD truck, I think a 49' that was used before the 53. It has decals on the side from the hardware store, and I plan on putting those back on ASAP. Even if I have to replace the wood on the sides I'll just get new stickers made up.

I ramble on...anyway I just wanted to say hello to this great resource, and I will keep updating new pictures and posting them here.

Hardwaretruck53,

Let me also welcome you to the bolt !

I viewed your photo album and looks like you have a great truck to start with.
Plus you have the added advantage of having a family history to go along with the project.

Welcome!
Brian

Welcome! Great looking truck it's going to be a blast for sure. Restoring something from the heart is the coolest. Your grandfather is a lucky man to have you putting your heart out. And you for getting a lasting memory. The guys here on the bolt are the best. You’ll find all the help you need right here.

Welcome. Your truck looks like a nice one. I have only been here a few weeks now, but everyone here is great, and there is a huge amount of experience and knowledge here.
Enjoy the truck & more important, your grandfather.I can just see the smile on his face riding down the road as the truck lives again.

Welcome on board the best truck site on earth. Nice truck pics. It looks like you really have a complete truck which should make your job a lot easier. I know grandad will be proud. Include him all you can in the work. It will be good for both of you. Good luck.

New Guy;
Congratulations on your graduation into our microculture. Welcome, pull up a stool (like you haven't already). A very, very fine looking start you've got there, and what a bonus to have acquired it from family. Respect that man, and the granddaughter he made for you, and tell him you'll think long and hard about which grandchild you'll pass the truck on to, when it's time.

Welcome hardwaretruck53!

That is one beautiful truck you wiggled into. I bet grandpa is happy to see something being done with it. Enjoy the truck and this site!

Welcome. Nice truck and pictures. In looking at the pictures I have a question. Just out of curiousity, is that a vacuum tank on the firewall above the engine? If so was that a GM item?

Welcome, its real nice to see another Michigander join the group. Thats a real nice pickup you got there, and a neat story to go with it. This is a real neat place to get parts, advice, and misc. information. Enjoy yourself.
