on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 355 Member | | Member Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 355 | We have several trucks here. When I started this project to redo some of them, i start to notice the many differnt things about the cabs. Our 47 has 2 sets of mounting holes in the floor, it has an oval shaped hole that the stearing column goes though the breather for the hydro-vac dont go though the floor of the cab, but mounts on the frame. It has no rain gutter on it firewall. This truck was built in Sept of 47. I also have a 48 3100, that was built in Feb. It has no rain gutter on its firewall, an odd shaped rounded hole for the column, and its fuel tank in in the frame. Another 48 3600 we have, has a perfect round hole for the column, a rain gutter in the firewall, and its tank in behind the seat. Its was built in Oct of 48. There seems to be a lot of unmentioned changes in the cabs over a short period of time. I find this all great as its part of the collecting that i like better than the actual fixing of the truck. I'm sure theres more little quirks there that i have seen yet. Just let me take another 10 or so apart.! | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | Don't forget to mention the slight difference in the early AD doors too, Scott | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 355 Member | | Member Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 355 | Wow i forgot the week and a half struggle with the belt lines. Seems that the 47 had a belt line with a differnt curve at the front end. Our doors werent in the best shape, so we opted to use ones from a 49 truck. Never knew the differntance until we mounted them for a test fit. The belt line is now about 1/2 lower at the front than the back. The back lines up fine. There is not enough play in the door adjustment to make it right. Good thing Scott brought this up,as I didnt take any pictures of it showing the differance. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 874 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 874 | Somebody told me that 47's do not have that little half round indent on the bottom of the dash for the steering column just above where it mounts. Is this correct? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 355 Member | | Member Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 355 | I think the dent you refer to, is the one for the column shifter, and no the 47's used a floor shifted three speed, instead of the side shifted one, used in 48 and on. Also only a 47 gauge set will fit the dash, as the lower two bolts are closer together. Again this is because of not having a column shifter. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 2,399 Former Workshop Owner | | Former Workshop Owner Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 2,399 | I imagine some differences are from changes through the years, and others may be from different tooling and equipment or processes at the various manufacturing plants. I plan on taking lots of pictures, and keeping notes on my Art Decos, once I get started. I agree with you, that is part of the fun. All of the research one can pursue, turns a basic restoration project into a hobby with a passion.
I am still working on my building, I hope to get started on mine this winter.
