i hoping there is a seal in there but it looks hard to change does anybody know what im in for
time or expense i would like to try avoid the
55 dollar an hour mechanic

| | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 | Could be as simple as a leaking oil pressure sender or as tough as a rear mail seal-remove the trans clutch cover, see if there is oil all over the flywheel. Hop up on top of the engine & see if there is oil at the rear of the intake-seal could be leaking there or the oil pressure sender(could be a sender for a light or a tube if you have a gauge). You may have to clean up the area & run it again to find the source. You didn,t say if its a v-8 or 6 but either way you can get to the rear seal by pulling the pan. Not a fun job especially on the 6.

A leaking gasket or sender unit can dump a lot of oil in a short time, and it can run down and drip off in the darndest places, making it look like a leaking seal, when in fact, it might not be. I didn't catch if it was an automatic or manual shift. If an automatic it could be the front seal in the tranny. Is it oil or pink tranny fluid? Either way it looks like the tranny will have to come out unless your lucky with one of the "simple" items. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 445 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 445 | Im sure you don,t have too drop the tranny to change the rear oil seal.just take off flywheel cover pan and look upto see if the main is leaking.It will be a wet with oil.if leaking drop the oil pan,the rear main bearing cap and just loosen two crank bearing caps from the back up.They make a tool that pulls the new seal in place.or you can doit with a piece of wire carefully and trim the seal off ever with the block.Its a rope seal :confused:
