I have 3 horns that look like snails... different from what I have seen in photos, one mounted on the inside of each fender and one on the exhaust manifold...
were these aftermarket or what?

Some people mount the pair (up through 1953) on the intake manifold or on the firewall or on the inner fender (I think there are earlier discussions of this accessory dual-horns, with links to pictures).
In 1954/55, the dual horns were mounted on the grill side of the radiator housing/frame. dirt, mud, water and crud will hurt the horn as well as plug it up w/ dust.
try the front of the radiator for the pair of Hi/Lo tone ones. aim the openings down or slightly towards the rear

I'm not sure, but I think the mud, crud and water would be on/in the 'outer' fender well.
Isn't the inner fender well the portion, or side, inside the engine compartment, warm and well protected.
