I've got the 230 c.i. in my '63. The engine is only supposed to have about 5,000 miles. It looks stock, and completely original to me, but that's what I was told and I don't know much about it beyond that.

It'll cruise at 70 all day without a hint of drama. I haven't tried to push it any harder, but it works less than several old V8's I've driven. FWIW.

I have owned 3 1966 Chevrolet pick-ups, and each one felt somewhat different on the road.

My C-30 with a 250 and a 4 speed was OK up to around 60mph. Beyond that speed, it did not feel right. I took it up to about 70 once, and it was really scary. eek

My first C-10 also had a 250, and a 3 on the column. It would cruise safely on the interstate at 65-70mph. Going any faster did not feel right.

My current pick-up is another C-10, and has a 283 and a Powerglide. I have not owned it too long, but it is comfortable going 65-70mph. Even though it is capable of going a bit faster than the sixes, it probably will handle like the others at higher speeds. Therefore, I will not go any faster than 70mph. It is just too dangerous.

49 with a 56 235", 3 speed and stock 4:11 rear.
0 to 60 mph - 2 weeks.
Top speed - at least 65 mph but my eyeballs were bleeding and I had to slow down. Man what a rush!!!

The Borg-Warner overdrive was only used on open driveshaft (post '55) trucks. There was a company that retro-fitted them to torque tube drive, they were called Overdrive Inc. I don't know if they are still in business though.

The stock, tired 283 in my '62 Suburban hums along at 70mph very nicely. the previous owner told me he thought the dana 44 rear end had 4.11 gears.
There's a bad vibration that kicks in past that.
It's somewhere in the driveline, but not sure where yet. Could be u-joints, but I doubt it. motor mounts, or the engine is out of balance for whatever reason. Getting a new engine and trans this winter.
