For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 145 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 145 | '51, 3100, 235...I was driving around this morning, in town, 30 mph. When I had to slow for a car in front, I downshifted to 3rd gear. Just as I started to accellerate, I felt a "bump" and heard a noise. The truck started a howling that was sickening. I had to drive it for a block. It only howls when on even throttle or accellerating. With my head out the window it sounds like Tranny (SM420).
Will someone please tell me what I might start looking for? I was gonna drive it to K.C, MO tomorrow but that is out.

My apologies. This should have been posted in the "Engine/Driveline" area.

if you cant find out that way, I would fire it up and run it through the gears and see what falls out... (very carefully)

Thanks so much for the help. I'll keep you posted.

Got a lot of noise from the front on the driveline and it got worse as I went back. I pulled the inspection plate off and guess what!! I could move the ring gear up and down about 1/2 inch. I have no idea how it could not have come apart.
Monday I'll order 3.55 gearset and installation kit from Patrick's.
I don't have the special tools/pullers to do the job so it's off to a machine shop to get done.
Thanks again for the advice.
