I've bought a sweet one tone dump-truck. Runs well and I having fun geting started restoring. I can't seem to find the orignal rear drums. Can I have the ones on it welded and then machined back to the original 14"? Is there a secret stash out there somewhere? I've tried American Classic and Jim Carter with no luck. Please give me some ideas.

Old Joe,
unfortunately no one makes those drums these days, at least not that I am aware of. I don't think that anyone has come up with a process to add metal, either. Your only source is to find used ones. You could try the swap meet and you could also give Mother Truckers a call.

Another path is to change the brake setup on the back to a more modern setup for which you can buy parts.

If a 59 model 3800 has the same brakes, I've got some. Email me!

SplashOil,
was that the same drums for front and rear ?

The 1 Ton drums for the 1951 are 14" on the rear and 12" on the Front. I think this may be the same from 1947 to 1952.

Fred, You are correct about the different diameters. I looked in a '54 shop manual which showed 12" front drums and 14" rear drums for one ton trucks. Another consideration is that front and rear shoes may have different widths, hence different drums even with the same diameter.
When I looked in my Canada parts catalogue, I was amazed at the numerous combinations listed depending on axle size, type of tires, production date, serial # sequence, Budd wheels,etc.. I could not find the part # I pulled from the '46-'72 parts book.
I'm not sure if that is because different #'s are used in Canada, or if different parts are used.
I would verify that front and rear drums are also the same width, if they are listed as the same diameter.
Can I make it any more confusing? grin

Splash,
I guess that the design people found creative ways to keep busy, read that employed!

I missed out on one of those Canadian catalogs on Ebay, on the weekend. I got sniped but it was probably out of my budget range anyway!
