I just found out about your site a couple weeks ago and I have been browsing non stop ever since. I went out and took pics of my 1950 GMC today. It was given to me by my grandfather. It sat for 8 years before I got it..I am 23 years old and own my own house, so my budget is tight. I didnt think It was ever going to see the road again but I put in a new battery, rebuilt the carb, cleaned the gas tank and she fired right up. I was amazed. The break system was a whole nother story. That had to be compleatly overhauled but she is on the road now. The fenders and upper half of the cab had some major rust/ rot. So I removed most of it and patched some holes where needed then hit it with a flat kahki enamel. I think it came out ok. I am going to get it profesionally painted later on down the road. One thing the truck needs badly is running boards. I unfortunatly dont have the $400 right now for new ones. Let me know what you guys think of her.

1950GreenRustHalfTon,
Welcome here and a good thing you found us, they know everything here and share it for free. It's amazing, so many different vehicles and still you'll always find the answer here. I'm only a member for a few months, but I found out that the wierdest questions can be solved here, if you want a conversion, swap engine or trany, differential or disk brakes, it's done before and the tricky parts are known and shared.
I have a problem I can't see the rust only a bit on the rear bumper, it looks ok to me and the 2tone paint is a nice combination. Original?
With all those pictures you got most of your own Bolt page already together, drop a few lines about it here and Peggy wil list you in the Gallery.
Welcome, grab a coffee and start reading, you're ten years behind the oldest members here smile

Hey GreenRust, Nice looking truck, far better looking than what most of us have had to start out with. I think that you'll find that this can be a very rewarding hobby. It will only be as costly as you decide to make it. The older GM cars and trucks in my opinion are about the easiest and least expensive vehicles to repair and maintain.
You will discover that many of the mechanical parts are interchangeable over a wide range of years.
You are very lucky get something like this passed down to you from your Grandfather.

Enjoy that truck, and keep us informed about any more progress.

John

Nice lookin' truck.

What part of FLA are you in? I have a spare set of running boards from a '50 Chevy that are not in great shape but could possibly be used to patch holes. I'd hate to have to ship them though.

Thanks for the comments guys. RedGreen, I am on Amelia Island not to far from you. I dont know if my running boards are salvegable though. They are preety much totally rotten from end to end. Do any of you guys know where I can get a set of 6v amber fog lights used? I found a new set but they want $80 shipped. Thanks again for the positive feedback.

Nice looking truck there GreenRust! Is that an antique store it's parked in front of?? If that's your store then do yourself a favor and get to a quick sign place and have them make up a nice set of door magnets. That way you can potentially deduct some of your expenses! AND it's great marketing!

Larry Bear, That is our antique mall.. I have thought about getting some signs painted on the doors of the truck to mimic an old delivery truck. I am still undecided on the look I am going for.

Welcome, love your truck, love the paint scheme. I think the Antique sign for the doors would be first rate, I bet there's a 'retired' sign painter in your area, be patient, ask around and you'll find him. All the best to you and yours, Cosmo.

The VIN or body serial number is gospel. For help there go to oldgmctrucks.com and they have a database of serial nos. A 1/2-ton GMC of that age will be a 100 series truck. It will have 6 lug bolts per wheel. 3/4-ton will be a 150 series and will have 8 lug bolts. Other differences, too but these are the most obvious. One cool thing about the GMC's that Chevy did not have at that time was a longbed 1/2-ton. Good luck.

I hear ya about wanting to figure out the look before you have anything painted on the doors. I'm in the same boat. So until I get to the body and paint on my 56, I had nice magnetic ones made up. The material is real thin. They do the job very nicely and the truck has become well known with our store. You can see the signs on the link below.

Good luck!

GreenRust,

Give me about a year and I'll drive my '50 Chevy up and introduce myself. It'll take about that long to finish putting it back together.

Let me know if I can help you out with anything on your truck.

Your truck is very nice! You are lucky to have received it from your Grandpa. Knowing the history will make it all the more special. The wife and I spent a few days on the beach there in your town. That's a cool place to relax and I still dream about the wonderful nightly lobster feasts.

nice truck! I dig the paint scheme... good thinking.

someone here on the 'bolt... has/had an AD('47-'55) truck... and their running boards were trashed or not there... so they made running boards out of wood and mounted them up. They had a flat bed tho', but it looked nice and was a good solution I thought.

Welcome to the 'bolt... we like trucks that are driven... and used even. smile
