I'm looking to maybe replace the flat bed on my 72 c60. I was wondering if anyone in the tri-state area (Cincinnati, Ohio) has good leads on steel. I will be using C channel to make the bed, with maybe 10 guage to top it. The prices seem to be steep right now. I still have 2 recycling places to look at, but am open for suggestions.

I know that this does not seem to apply to your situation but please bare with me My friend from Seattle got all of the steel he needed tomake bumper for his truck (a big lifted monstrosity) from "Seattle Tug" down at the pier. He went in and asked if they had scrap he could look at, and they sent him out back with an emplyee. He got two lengths of 10" C channel steel to make the bumper and it was free.

What I am sugegsting is that you should talk to some companies that are not steel companies but deal with steel in their day to day business. You might get lucky and find the right one! Good Luck.

Good luck finding an bargins on new steel. You would be lucky to find any at the scrap yard either. Thanks to China, scrap steel is at record prices. Junk cars are bringing over $200 dollar here. Most of the stuff coming into a scrap yard in cut down to 3' or less as thats the lenth for max value. You might try going out in the county and finding a newer wrecked or retired truck with a useable bed.

Suggestion:

Steel is slick when you get oil on it. I almost used it on my 1 ton, but when I looked at weight and price, I went with wood which will absorb a lot of contaminates, is easy to modify, and will last pretty good. I have put 3600 lbs on my wood deck and it's been no problem. I did build a rather stout frame under it and you can see it in the tech tips. Then again if you put bedliner on it - it would resist scratches and give it some non-skid-ness.

try shannon tool in sharonville,bill price is the owner and one heck of a good guy. also might try cohen bros. in middletown. and maybe the recycling center in richmond ind. all else fails theres always jorgeson there in cinn. but youll pay a premium. and now that i think about it isnt ther a steel place down off freeman ave exit where you go down under that overpass wher 50 and river road come together? i yhink i would try there after shannon tool.good luck.

I looked around till I found a used steel flatbed for my 54 GMC one ton. It needs some work but it will sit on my truck just fine and was a lot cheaper than new.
