I'm going to the Pick a Part next week to get a T5 out of an S10. Can anybody advise me on what tools I will need and any tips that might help. I don't have much experience with manual shift S10s. Is there any trick to removing the shifter? Thanks for the help.

Fortynine5-

Four bolts hold the shifter in - pull them out and the shifter is off. Oh - be sure to take a pair of big pliers to remove the spring that holds the boot on around the shifter.

Be sure everything in your tool bag is metric. That's all you can use on these. If you're not going to take the clutch and/or flywheel, remove the four transmission bolts, remove the speedometer cable, drop the drive shaft and you should be able to slide that dude right out. Did I forget anything?

The T-5 that I got had those special "Torx" bolt heads that was to the bell housing and on the four shifter bolts aswell. Also, get the rear yoke too.

Just the plug that connects the back up lights. You might want to leave it on and cut the wires as far as possible from the transmission,so you can splice it into your wiring harness. Also,I always grab as much of the related stuff as I can get away with-there's always something you later wish you'd taken while you were there.Later,if you don't use it in your install you can sell it or give/throw it away.
The driveline should just slip out,so if the engine's already gone, you can just pull the tranny forward to free it. Best to snag the driveline too though. You'll probably need at least the yoke from it.

In addition to getting the tranny definately take the clutch, pressure plate, back up light plug and as much of the wire you can get, take any adaptor for the speedo that is hooked up to the tranny, and get the drive shaft or tranny yolk. You may also get the crossmember on the back of the tranny.

I used the clutch from the 85 s-10 I got my tranny from in my '51. It was the same diameter as the original, had the correct number of splines and was in good shape.

FortyNine,
I went to a couple of pick a part type yards last week in the LA area, (Sun Valley). Every one of the s10's had already had the engine & manny tranny's pulled- I mean these guys must be circling like vultures because the date of delivery on most of these trucks was the first week of March. I did see a couple of automatics still sitting in trucks and blazers, but no T5's.

I hope you have better luck.

6Cyl You didn,t mention pulling the crossmember. Can you remove the trans without pulling it? It looks like it would be hard to get off for an old man laying on gravel with hand tools.

go take your T5 insert plug to a chevy dealer and have them ''look'' for the wired pigtail.
there are several types of plugs and my local chev dealer took about a week to fined the correct one. the problem is as seen in the microfish data parts book viewer... NO differentiation between one to the next pigtail.

it's a GO FISH type parts number system ????

take your metric tools... grab the rear tranny mount

I'd get the crossmember too if you can...makes it easier to fab one for your truck.

Fortynine5 -

Well, I guess I wasn't thinking outside the box!

Hell, take everything you can get! I personally already got a crossmember on my truck that's made to fit the truck. I guess I could take one that fits the tranny and make it fit the truck, but it seemed easier to make the one that fits the truck fit the tranny. Sorry about the Torx bolts - I used pliers and Vise Grips. I didn't think about buying a set of Torx things just to pull a tranny. Back up light switch? My 37 doesn't have back up lights.
Definitely get the yoke (part of the tranny) and the drive shaft is good to get unless you have one on your truck already that matches to your rear axle. I wouldn't touch the clutch. A new clutch is not that expensive and it will be clean and you can get the right size to fit your flywheel.

It all depends on whether your getting a transmission or a driveline. grin
