I was wondering if it would be ok to put a truck into storage using moth balls inside to discourage bugs and critters from using the truck. I was reading where it is good to use kitty litter to absorb moisture but I'd like to use moth balls also in the cab to make it unpleasant for any rodents or bugs to use the cab as a nest. Has anyone tried this? Are there any things that can be damaged by this? I'd let the truck air out well before using it. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I think a mousetrap or two, and a goodly supply of Irish spring will work nicely.

We have put mothballs around farm equipment to keep the mice out of them. Simply spread the balls around the truck and mice won't come near it.

I used to use mothballs all the time when I stored my 63 Chevy Conv't. Never had a problem. The best way to get the order out I found was I would park the car in the sun w/top down.

Yep I always use bounce dryer sheets and Irish Spring soap bars in the camper. I have never had any problems with mice. However, I keep the camper in my heated building, so this may help also. smile

Dryer sheets work great... for awhile.

What happens is that sooner or later the dryer sheets loose their smell, then the little bastards start carrying the sheets off to make nests out of!

For short term, dryer sheets.. for long term, go with moth balls.. or a cat or two!

I discovered that a 5 gallon bucket tipped on its side with some molasas makes a good mouse trap.. they walk into the bucket to get to the molasas then get stuck in it and die.

I found that out on accident.. I have a large water tank I had tipped upside down to keep the rain and wind off some sacks of corn I feed the cows.. there was a mostly empty bucket of molasas under there and at some point it had got tipped over.. then about every other day or so i'd find a dead mouse stuck in it.

Just make sure to pull the dead mice out of there while they're sort of fresh.. if a week or so goes by, they dont come out in one piece!

an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.

So what do you do with the Irish Spring soap? Do you just take it out of the wrapper? Will one bar keep them out of the cab of a truck, or does it take a several. Does the Irish Spring lose its scent like the dryer sheets, or will it last forever if you scrape the sides occasionally?

I heard about moth balls and dryer sheets, but not the Irish Spring. Sounds like an interesing alternative. Never did care for moth balls.

Thanks for the advice but I'll pass on the Irish Spring thing. I'd get tired of everyone coming by the truck and whistling. :p Seriously though, I'll have to try it.

I would think that the dryer sheets would out last putting a cat in the truck. But, on the other hand, the smell of the cat may actually out last the dryer sheets. . .

Nevermind! grin grin cool
