I just bought a 49 1/2 ton and a 52 1/2 ton parts truck. The parts truck doesn't have: a bed, a grill, any windows, or transmission. The floor panels are completely shot, engine is there (unknown condition) and the front fenders are in decent shape.

When I bought it, the owner did not have a title, nor did the previous owner. Since this truck will likely retire to Stovebolt Heaven with honors, is it worth me spending $150 (bond & title fee) to have it titled?

no, but it'd be good to have a written bill of sale from the seller, just in case ....

Possession is 9/10 of the law. If nobody has proof of ownership, the guy sitting on it wins (LOL),

I agree. I wouldn't go through the trouble unless you foresee a problem - such as with a former owner or nosy neighbor.

The '59 we just got was purchased by one farmer from another farmer on a handshake - in 1974 - it was never titled again since it was only used on the farm where it spent its life. We'll retitle that only after we get it road-worthy again.

Check your local laws, because some areas require ANY vehicle sitting in your lawn to have tags.. regardless of its condition.

In some areas a bill of sale alone will not legally establish ownership of a motor vehicle, it just establishes that you didn't steal it.

Most laws don't distinguish between a freebee junker and a $180,000 sports car.. in neither case does the "I dunno man, some guy just gave it to me" or "It was sitting in the garage when I bought the place" excuse enough to get you out of a reieving stolen property charge.

Most junkyards are required to keep some kind of paperwork on every vehicle on their lot.. known as "salvage" titles.. you may wanna check with your local DMV/Highway Patrol/City official to find out what your requirements are by law.. but at the very least you should have a bill of sale with the name and address of the person you got the vehicle from.

In some states its flat out illegal to posess a motor vehicle that does not have a VIN or serial number.. but none of these senerios really come into play unless you've got John Q. Law nosing around your place.. and that normally dosen't happen unless you've had a neighbor complain about your private junk yard.

What Fumblin said But also
It could be worth it to you to get the title in your name And take the VIN tag off BEFORE scrapping it out to Recoup some of your Initial Investment to someone who needs it wink

Are there people buying those? I have a couple junk trucks with good titles and VIN tags.. but I guess I figured that would be illegal as hell to do.

get a bill of sale, and check the laws, it would suck to get into legal trouble over a freakin parts truck.
