Hey everyone, My name is Abe Moll and im a 16 yearold from western ny. I went anbd vought myself a 1966 Chevy truck. It was an old tow truck, and i fell in love with it cause it will be perfect for what I want to have, a nice truck but one im not afraid to use on the farm.

Now forgive my ignorance on these vintage trucks, cause the only experience ive had with them is, well, nothing.

The truck i bought has factory 4 whell drive. It has a 12 bolt rear end and the muncie 4 speed. The guy said the truck is a 3/4 ton, which makes sence cause the wheelbase is 127 inches. However, the thing that is puzzling me is the fact that it has leafsprings all around, and a 12 bolt rear, which is what the 1 tons had.

The truck originally had a 292 but they PO, the guy that bought it in 66, put a 283 in it for more power (i feel 292's have gobs of tourque, much more than a 350, let alone a 283). It runs like a top and i have driven it around quite a lot.

I guess they aint good pictures, but its better than nothing.

I guess what im getting to is what the hell is it. Is it a 1 ton or is it a 3/4 ton.

thanks alot guys, this site is great and ill prolly keep yall posted with what i do with it, my goal is to resore it as best i can with my resources and money.

Welcome to the bolt and congrats on your new truck. For your area that truck appears to be in very good condition. The reason your truck has front springs is due to the 4wd system. Hope to see you around here and good luck on the project.

Four wheel drive was leafs in the front on all models until 1987 if I remember correctly. The independent front suspension four wheel drive starting in 1988 is torsion bar, not coil, on the 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton and 1-ton models.

I can't really see the emblems in the photos, does it say K20 or K30? The 20 would mean 3/4- and 30 1-ton. Also, the VIN number will tell you if its a 3/4-ton or 1-ton if you look it up.

Are you sure about the 12-bolt rear? That rear was used in cars and 1/2-ton pickups and I don't think was ever made in a floater version. If the truck has 3-lug hubs its probably not the rear that is commonly called a '12-bolt'.

that is a good lookin old truck. little rusty, but that is expected for your location. i think that is going to turn into a real sweet ride. welcome to this page, it has been incredibly helpful to me in my restoration.

well today it was a nice day so i decided to grease the driveline and front end... man it needed it bad, im glad i did it. I also gaver her a good wash cause the salt will kill her before spring if i dont.

My dad has an old 292 that runs beutifly, only problem is he has it in a forklift he made, so its gonna take some real smooth talking to trade him haha.

I took it to school yesterday... it looked good settin aorund honda civic's and such. Its an awesome truck, even though she's short legged, i wouldnt trade it for nothing.

Im trying to locate a decent pickup bed for it, problem is the truck of that vintage around here are well, non existant. I may have to go south to find a decent one at a reasonable price.

oh its a beast.... i took her out in the orcheds for a spin... i was going through stuff that our F350 would get buried in, i was amazed.

the steering is alot harder in 4lo in mud haha.

Look at the bright side. If someone hits that thing from behind...well...it might scratch your paint...a little. The cool kids are going to be jealous. The dopes will think its an old turd. Just wait till the dopes need to be hauled out of the snow.

I like this truck. I like it allottt. Ya lucky lil fart. Make sure you keep us all up on your progress. Good luck, can't wait to see her when it's done!

LOVE THE TRUCK, I KNOW IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF WORK BUT I ENVY YOU. THE TRUCK IS SO MUCH SWEETER WHEN YOU KNOW YOU DID IT ALL.

Looks great, wish I could find something like that around here. It's nice to see young guys like you interested in these old trucks. The guys in the rice burners might be faster, but when they're stuck on the pavement you'll still be rollin'. Keep us all posted on your progress.

Just to keep ya posted, the other day on the way home from work I went to the gas station to get fuel, and while I was fueling up, the wiper must have froze up, caue I went to go again and the driver side wiper quit. so I drove 15 miles through a whiteout with my head out the window.

I went to auto zone today (the only place around here with domestic parts) and they dont have wiper arms that old.

ill go to a junkyard or something.

Also, Im having a terrible time finding a pickup bed that will work with my truck. Because it is a towtruck, the frame is diffrent from normal 3/4 tons. I do have a morgan hardwood flatbed that will work perfect with it, but I dunno if I should put it on.

Neat old truck! Lots of potential. Don't trust that "Mico brake lock" to far. They have a nasty habit of bleeding off when you're too far from the truck to catch it.(don't ask)

haha...yeah them things aint no good... i also need to get a brake cable.

I also need new brakelines, they are a bit rusty.
