For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 200 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 200 | On a few of the pictures I have seen of the 1946 chevy trucks, I noticed a toolbox that looks like it is mounted on the running board. At first i figured someone just modified their ride to have one, but then I saw it on a rough farm find, rusted up the same as the restored ones. Is this an item that belongs on the truck as original options or is it just coincidence that more than one person had it? I'm no expert, but I've never seen a tool box listed in any of the accesory manuals I've looked at. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 | I'm with Eric.
I've never seen one in a Factory Accessory Manual either.
I think it was an aftermarket option, installed by the dealer or by the consumer.
That having been said, I have seen pictures of trucks with toolboxes. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,682 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,682 | I've not seen many of the options catalogs to say with 100% certanty that they were not offered as a factory option, but of the catalogs i've seen, i've not ever seen one.
In fact, I don't recall ever seeing one period.. does somebody have a link to a pic of one? I didnt see any visable in the trucks in the gallery.

I guess I better cut the lock off and see what's in it. My luck all I'm getting out of it is a lot of rust between the box and running board.

I have to admit it's a natural place for a tool box. I've also seen gas cans, chain boxes and handyman jacks mounted there.(also a bucket of fence staples, once.) I'd put one on my '57 if it had running boards, but since it has a fleetside bed I'm stuck with a crossbed box and a couple of smaller fenderwell boxes. I did score a BIG gangbox that now resides on my 62's flatbed. Nothing cooler than having a locked mystery box thrown in on a good deal! I'd guess if they put a lock on it, they probably kept somethin' in it they didn't want folks rifling thru.. cut the lock and let us know what you find! I'm not feelin' the whole running board toolbox thing, tho.. if my 1/2 ton had one, i'd have to take it off.. looks like something good for nothing but trapping mositure on the running board.

Anything of value is long gone. I did find some antique fence staples, a short piece of 1 1/2 pipe and some antique road dust.
